Dash8 yaw damper engagement.
A quick question for all the Dash8 captains regarding Y/D engagement time. I have asked a few previous operators as to when they engage the Y/D on the dash 8 and have had mixed answers. Without naming names when do you engage the Y/D before or after Take off..??? Thanks in advance.

Depends...100 or 300?
On the 100 will depend on flap setting and weight

Re: Dash8 yaw damper engagement.
On the 400 it’s engaged after start and switched off after landing.
Not that it does anything when it’s on though...

Depends on the model and weight. For example, on the -100 you have to have YD off if your weight is light and V1 is below 92 KIAS. (If I remember correctly. It has been a while since I flew the Dash)
Das ist mir wurst...

If you're light you can use 92 as v1 and leave it on.HansDietrich wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 2:13 pm Depends on the model and weight. For example, on the -100 you have to have YD off if your weight is light and V1 is below 92 KIAS. (If I remember correctly. It has been a while since I flew the Dash)
Basically it's never turned off unless it's a flap 15 takeoff on the 100 and always on for the 300. Left on after landing and while parked too

Q400 at my operator its on before takeoff.
Re: Dash8 yaw damper engagement.
Our AOM has us turn on the yaw damp on the first flight of the day, during the pre-start instrumentation check. We don't usually turn it off until power is removed from the aircraft at the end of the day. The only exception to this is in situations where the yaw damp is required to be off, such as flap 15* take-offs, narrow runway operations, V1 below 92 knots, etc., all depending on whether it's a DH8A or DH8C. Basically, the yaw damp is required to be off at any point where more aggressive rudder action might be required, such as for Vmcg or narrow runway reasons.

Yup. And honestly I couldn't tell.FL007 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 1:58 pmEver land one when it kicked off?PostmasterGeneral wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 12:49 pm On the 400 it’s engaged after start and switched off after landing.

If it kicked off its usually in a crosswind, you honestly couldn't tell the difference with no yaw damp on a 300 or Q?Lightchop wrote: ↑Thu Nov 15, 2018 1:15 pmYup. It literally feels like your putting a rudder into a brick wall, there's no gentle application, not to mention at a reduced airspeed.
Re: Dash8 yaw damper engagement.
I flew from YVR to PDX with no yaw damp or A/P my first month of line indoc. Honestly couldn't tell. It wasn't that windy but I did hand bomb or the whole way.
Re: Dash8 yaw damper engagement.
Classic or Q? I've flown the classic lots of times with no yaw damp. You only really notice on take off and landing and it gets pretty touchy
Re: Dash8 yaw damper engagement.
Q.
It feels like there's no yaw damper all the time.

Re: Dash8 yaw damper engagement.
As stated, the 100 at light weights or flap 15 its required to be off. It wasn't always this way but about 15ish years ago the Bombardier pilots went for a little excursion into the grass at Downsview because of Vmcg issues, Not enough rudder at light weights hence the speed bump to 92 knots, (31000 lb numbers) with flap 5.
