Obtaining Aircraft Records from Transport Canada

Post by Spandau »

I recently contacted the FAA and obtained a copy of my aircraft's old FAA records (registrations, maintenance records, bills of sale, etc) and was wondering if I can do the same thing in Canada and if so, who do I contact? Anybody know the procedure? I have no tech records from 1958 to about 1984 except for a small notation that my airplane underwent a major repair sometime in the late sixties. It seems most of her previous owners are gone now.

I would contact the Aircraft Maintenance & Manufacturing branch of your local TC office and you also could request an ATIP for what you are looking for as well from them also.

I was thinking of calling them and seeing what they have to say. What's an ATIP?

Guys,

I send copies of my log books to TC every couple of years or so. They keep them on file and if anything should happen to the originals I will be able to recreate most of the history. They store them for free.

That's not a bad idea, Jim - I may do that in the future. Just got off the phone with a very helpful Inspector in the Calgary office so hopefully this will pan out. Sure is a trick to actually get a real person on the phone with Transport these days, though.

So, my results are in; the inspector requested my airplane's file and called me when he got it. Although the aircraft was imported into Canada in 1958 and never changed it's registration other than the CF-/C-F bit, Transport has no records of it AT ALL prior to 1983. The FAA had records right back to it's initial sale from the manufacturer in 1946. :(

It took awhile, but I did indeed speak with a very helpful inspector at the Calgary office.
