I mean.....he's not wrong. It's IS better than a couple of old challengers and a 310 (300?). It's just no less wasteful for us than it was for them. Wrong plane for the mission.

Looks like politics as usual, taking a page from Jean Chretien's play book. A barely used 787-8 would be an excellent replacement for the VIP A310 (it would be able to fly non-stop to India for photo-Ops). Unfortunately the PM's aircraft is part of a fleet of 5 A310's that also fulfill a variety of transport roles and air to air refueling, they've had several public serviceability issues recently.

A used A330 would be a better fit as if would have commonality with the A330-200 derived MMRT, called Voyager by the RAF and RAAF, and would replace the CC-150 Polaris in all of it current roles.

Here's why Canada can't afford the 787

It honestly wouldn't be a horrible purchase. Nothing wrong with having one aircraft not the same as the others (they're ready for replacement anyways) for VIP transportation. It's nicer, newer, more reliable, and has the range for a flight anywhere in the world when we eventually have a government that needs it. Hell, its even better and more fuel efficient for Trudeau's photo op flights.

They're unloading it for a fraction of its value. Think of it as just a couple donations to Mastercard, or the UN.

That particular 787 is part of the 'teens' - early line numbers and have a host of structural differences and weight issues compared to your normal 787. Not to mention some wacky systems differences and such.

Many of these early builds were not accepted by airlines and Boeing unloaded these at firesale prices to private operators and such - some still sit and rot in Everett without engines.

It would not be a cheap airframe to operate - and we'd likely spend decades and untold $$$ on bizzare RCAF/Gov. of C "equipment requirements".

Whilst a nice 787 would certainly be superior to a 1980s retro 310 for VVIP transportation - the reality is the optics of such a purchase with an aircraft that is not "configurable" to different roles would be political suicide.

We'll likely see just a Global or something for the VVIP and probably A330 Voyagers for personnel transfer/re-fueling.

The US is about to replace the two Air Force Ones... why don't we just buy those with our apparently unlimited tax-payer pockets?

The Government of Canada no matter the PM and his/her political stripe isn’t going to touch that ‘87 or anything similar with a 50 ft barge pole.
