So have you finished your flying lessons yet? The last time I replied to you you were crying about giving up and how hard it was and how hard done by you are. Has this situation changed?

So are you a pilot looking for work seriously; or a troll looking for the easiest least amount of work path to a flying job?

I would suggest applying yourself with some work ethic. Hellian was right in his advice.

You in a forum of pilots with thousands of hours who have lost carriers because of this COVID clusterfuck and you’re crying poor me looking for the easy way? How easy do you think it is to emigrate? Have you even looked at this?

Do you honestly think that you have it harder than anyone else has had it, on here?
Maybe look up Piloty on here if you want to learn what a good attitude seems to be. He’s (she) gonna be successful I would guess just from from the way he (she)presents himself (herself) in writing. To be successful you should emulate successful people

I think maybe you should just apply yourself do the hard work and maybe just maybe, someone my see your stellar potential and let you work loading freight and fuelling planes after several hours perhaps years of doing this you might get the opportunity to fly a plane or two. As far as I can see this is how a lot of people have got to where they are today. Not everyone gets to start at the top as you seem to think that you’re entitled to. Everyone has had it hard. Every generation thinks it is so special, yours especially(whatever it is)

Seems that getting a good commercial pilot job in your country of birth is kinda difficult. IF YOU ARE QUALIFIED:...Be a plumber in your home town? Kinda easy. Hang drywall in your home town? Kinda easy. Landscaper? Baker? Nurse? EMT? Police person? Police love local guys and gals. Be an automotive technician in your home town? Kinda easy. Be a lawyer in any of the 11 major cities in Canada? Kinda easy. Be a doctor in any of the 11 major cities of Canada? Kinda easy. Wanna be a commercial pilot in any of the 11 major cities in Canada? Kinda difficult. People on this forum say "Got a license? ..try Papua New Guinea or Japan. Mauritius comes to mind.." Wanna go to Inuvik for 3 years?.. Crikey mate! Hell on toast! Be a dentist instead! Drive for FedEx, be anything BUT a commercial pilot, especially if you want to live within a 500 nautical mile radius of your home town. GAWD! What a country!

Having a high school education and 200 hrs of flying time doesn't even began to compare to being a doctor. The Puppy Mills stroked your ego and took your money, sucker.

The US is a good Candidate but visa's are basically impossible to obtain now.
As a Canadian citizen you can't even travel to a lot of countries right now - let alone try to find employment.

There are lots of laid off Pilots in these countries as well - you will be at the end of a very long line of people.

Then you have all the laid off Expats looking for work.

Suggest you go North and work your way up - a lot of us on this Forum started that way.

Agreed, these geriatrics that run these toilet operators need some pushback, but it only takes one bottom feeders to offer to work for free or better yet to PAY to fly revenue to spoil it for the rest. Both of which I have seen personally done in my career from rich spawn I was competing with. This industry is in disgusting shape and needs some kind of entity to enforce wages like the red seal world.

I shake my head reading this forum sometimes.

To put it in perspective, this hasn’t changed much, at least in the 35 years I have been in this industry. I started at a regional for $1800/mth which equates to about $3500 today. Pretty similar, if not less than the stating wages now. And no I could not afford to buy a house at base with those wages either. Nor did I expect to on an entry level wage.

The difference between then and now is I and others that joined the industry and then Air BC, Time Air, OEL, Air Ontario, air Nova, PWA, CP, AC etc. with significantly more experience than those today, we knew the deal and accepted the conditions for a payoff years done the road. And it has paid off handsomely for me in both pay and lifestyle. Those joining the industry today don’t seem to have the same patience.

If you’re not willing to ‘pay your dues’ so to speak, you will have difficulty getting ahead in any industry. Aviation, a trade or anywhere else. That’s life so get on with it and quit whining about it. If you don’t have the stomach to weather the ups and downs in aviation, and there will be many in a career, go do something else. Don’t think life won’t throw you a few curveballs in another career either.

Some will write this off a ‘Boomer rant’, but it’s reality

I know tons of new grads who never had to pay dues, and were respected and treated like adults from day one. They make more than AC people do with the BS flat pay as well, first year outta school. If you look at cost of living in big cities, it's insane. Places are going up 30% A YEAR! Nobody is expecting to start out there but shitty operator waiving a carrot can really ruin your future if you ever intend on living in a city/town with more than 8 people in it!

But let's be grateful someone is willing to pay $18k a year up north where rent is $1k a month, only to "promise" you get a flying gig that never materializes.

Seems like a lot of people in aviation assume that "paying your dues" equate having to accept being treated like sh*t. That does not have to be the case.

The crappy jobs still need to be done, and it makes sense that the younger/newer/less experienced pilots have to do those things. If the economy allows it, you can't even blame operators for getting cheap non-pilot labour from pilots, but you can still treat the employees respectfully.

Things like:
- give the ramp guys a time frame, or at least have a policy as to when they will move on. Don't just hire 10 pilots off the street out of the blue, when the ramp guy has been there for 2 years and was told he would get a flying spot.
- creative paying schemes where the employee doesn't even make minimum wage or doesn't get any real time off.
- make them pay training bonds to "teach" them to operatore ground equipment
- using training bonds to threaten low time pilots to accept illegal stuff
---------- ADS -----------

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

And this right here is part of the problem, anyone accepting that low of a wage compared to anything else out there that makes the same (McDonalds & Tim Hortons) as a licensed ANYTHING in this industry or any other for that matter is underselling themselves BIG TIME. But hey, you think it pays dividends 35 years later, I’m sure you’re making well into mid six figures for that amount of time in. Times have changed and just because you put up with that crap doesn’t mean everyone after you should. I’m sick of listening to this rhetoric “I did it so should you” that’s not how any industry advances and ameliorates. The only favours this is doing for anyone is for the employer. The inflation rate and living costs have gone up exponentially since then to now. Boomer rant? YUP! To put things in perspective the red seal world constantly audits and enforced minimum wages by experience and going journeyman rates. 1st 2nd 3rd & 4th year make 60,70,80&90% of average shop rate, why that couldn’t be implemented by PIC hours is beyond me, but hey, as long as they keep pumping out delusional 100/200hrs (rotary/fixed) wet behind the ears CPLs with “stroked egos” as another post correctly indicated, that will work for free or pay to fly revenue and it’s ALLOWED, this trend will continue. Keep shaking your head, I’m doing the same, FYI I’ve been doing this for decades as well.

Well said, there seems to be a LARGE grey area for what people deem “paying your dues”. Most of us have been treated like garbage that have been in this industry long enough to collect a paycheque, and it’s just accepted as tribal knowledge that “that’s how it’s always been”, isn’t that at least one of the dirty dozen? Hmmmmmmmmm.
I do think some operators are coming around and evolving as the next generation comes in (I know first hand of a few I help out seasonally).
I hope that becomes the new norm and I would never have the arrogance or the audacity to claim the countless things I’ve witnessed others and myself endure in this industry as acceptable or normal and decent expectations and behaviour from an employer. If it wasn’t for an aircraft involved most of these employers that treat staff like this wouldn’t dare, except for the unjustified glory of flight they wave around as Carte Blanche being the all mighty caveat to said crappy employee treatment.

Hope is there but it’s not unlike the last grain of Fantasia these days...

It paid dividends a lot sooner than 35 years. For those that joined a 705 carrier in the last 4-5 years, it was a matter of months in many cases. This still wasn’t fast enough for some. Those days will return soon enough too.

If you want to compare to a journeyman of some sorts fill your boots. Not many will stand up to a 705 captains salary and benefits. Nothing against it, but no interest in those jobs so what’s the point? I make more than that, work less and don’t pack my lunch five days a week.

If you want to be an airline pilot, accept the starting conditions and get on with it. Otherwise go do one of those other jobs working too much with little time off. Either way quick whining about your lot in life. Even the starting wage at a good carrier plus benefits and some OT (in normal times) puts you ahead of many starting positions in any industry. Just ask my engineer daughter with a degree from one the best school in Canada with a $80k price tag. Similar to the cost of flight school.

You know, I’m personally not aligning everything in my statements with airlines specifically, I’m speaking about transport category aircraft industries as a whole in Canada. I know the pay scale at airlines in Canada personally tho and it doesn’t come till much later on and it’s not that great (where in your 35 years that was much earlier is subjective to when, and WHAT reasonable pay and schedule IS). And you were home every night? Really? You’re one of few.
The amount you lose out on getting to that point isn’t worth it. Speaking of red seal trades you know NOTHING about it from your statement, so don’t bother because I DO PERSONALLY.

I can’t believe I’m having this discussion in 2021 “If you want to be an airline pilot, accept the starting conditions and get on with it” with that statement you’ve lost all credibility with myself anyways. There is nothing wrong with wanting betterment of an industry you’re in, if not for yourself then at least the generations to follow. As for whining? Na not whining just standing up for what’s right and wrong. You like the coolaide tho so keep drinking.

As for your daughters $80,000 engineering degree that’s a very broad spectrum of disciplines and well worth the money if pursued properly.

Having a high school education and 200 hrs of flying time doesn't even began to compare to being a doctor. The Puppy Mills stroked your ego and took your money, sucker.

I 💯 percent agree with that, we are ALL replaceable, me, you, everyone. A wise man once said (my father) “when someone thinks they’re irreplaceable they’re usually the most easily replaced”. I get hit by a truck at noon my seat will be filled by coffee break.

Firstly this industry is like any other experienced based profession. Like plumbers and electricians (no way you can compare aviation to doctors, engineers or lawyers) apprentice positions pay shit and expect long hours.

Having said all that I have always discouraged hiring pilot wantabes to fill ramp and non flying positions. Mainly because the thirst of wanting to fly makes them real shitty grunts and office staff.

We are our own worst enemies. Whores and prostitutes who will accept that employer who is just exploiting cheap wages and slave labour. Promising you the world with no intention of living up to promises.

There is no solution apparent to this problem. We as a whole don't have the ability not to follow that carrot.

Yes and no, we are 💯 % our own enemies the way things currently are, see my above comments lol. There is a solution but TC is a toothless tiger and I don’t know if they’d ever enforce things like pre “open skies” in the 80s, air operators would cry bloody murder. Enforce wages like the red seal world right across the board which I am also a part of, that’s one idea and I’m just one guy, there’s surely several intelligent people in this industry that may have other ideas. I have a few more rattling around up there as well. Would be a good thread for this forum actually...
