freakin' radio rant.

Post by Shady McSly »

This has probably been brought up before but I don't care...

Whats with pilots calling up with THEIR ENTIRE CALL SIGN?!?!?

If your making a traffic call on 126.7 I don't give a rat's ass whether your aircraft is Canadian registered! C-FABC -> You can definitely omit the 'Charlie' and probably the 'Foxtrot' - we really only need the last few letters...chill out!

Choppers are bad for it but it seems as though it's ACTUALLY CATCHING ON!

Please...don't let it catch on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many of us spend more time overseas than in canada, and through force of habit we say the whole call sign. It would take more airtime and more stuttering to omit that charlie foxtrot or charlie golf than it would to just say it.

chill out dude...it takes 2 seconds to say. this is the first time i have replied to a radio rant post, because usually the posts are just such a waste of time, and this one is no exception.

Different folks do different things, and there are WAY worse habits on the radio than saying your full call sign. When you've been in 15 countries in the last year or with the same canadian ident, you just develop habits. deal with it. In YYR, the tower controllers will also use your full call sign sometimes....force of habit i expect from all the foreign aircraft they get through there. It never bothers anyone up there.

Personaly, when flying into a strange place away from larger centers, I prefere to hear someone who has terrible radio procedures like you so poorly described. Now I know there is somebody out there that is less than proficient, either by stupidity, carelessness or simply inexperience, and I can take appropriate precautions. The biggest danger I have encountered is someone who can talk the talk but cannot walk the walk.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

I heard a Golf Victor Whiskey Tango today- much like a Sault College plane- Foxtrot Victor Whiskey Tango.

If the guy didn't say Golf, I would have asked the guy to go to company frequency. At which point, there would have been a discussion clogging the airways because it wasn't the Victor Whiskey Tango I was thinking of, and GVWT would have no idea what I was talking about.

There's a reason why you have to say the last 4 letters- because that's who you are. (Unless tower initiates the three, of course.)

The Charlie at the front doesn't take much time anyways.

I apply the rule a crusty old tower guy told me once- "Just say whatever the @#$! you want."

Roger dodger, over and out.

Yeah, there are probably bigger radio problems than people giving too much information.

If you get out of the north and start flying internationally, when you call ATC and give them the last 3 of your call sign, you'll probably hear:
"Canadian Civil, GXXX",
or they will read back your full call sign,
or, they will have no idea who you are and ask you to say your callsign again...

....once again, get a life

To add to the confusion, where I fly controllers will call the aircraft by the first identifier and then the last two. Example: VP-ABC would be called VBC. Screwed me up for the first while but now I'm used to it. You're gonna hate me when I get back to Canada and mess up the first week.

...excellent point...it's been awhile since I've been across the pond, but I remember being real confused the first time they called us by the "wrong" call sign....

It's amusing to watch people actually get upset about something of such tertiary importance in aviation as comm radio usage ... you guys wanna argue about brands of microwave popcorn next?

When I plan on staying in the circuit I will say Cherokee Foxtrot Uniform Bravo Charlie is backtracking ... and then after that I will just shorten it to UBC, likewise when ever I make initial contact with someone I try to say Cherokee FUBC then after estableshed I use UBC, it dosnt always work out that way but atleast I dont say C-FUBC everytime I talk.
