Private Strip

Post by mark_ »

Hi knowledgable Canadian aviators,

What is required to have a private strip on your own property? Can you just carve out a runway and use it? Do you need to be a certain distance from your neighbours...anyone know how much red tape there is to go through? What about helicopters...do the same rules apply?

Thanks all,
Regads,
Mark

local zoning laws would apply, that said just make it. It's far easier to beg forgiveness, than ask permission

As long as your property is not in a "populated area", fill your boots.

I hope you guys appreciate how easy it is to set up a farm strip in North American. They just don't exist here. I remember reading about a decision to put in an ice strip in the mountains on a lake and it took two years of planning and the runway was only allowed open for one weekend. :(

Talk to these folks. Really nice people. They have a strip South East of London. They built it about 10 years ago so should be fairly fresh on the regs.

You mean - as long as it is not within the built up area of a city or town.

Right. Transport would be after me again if you did something like this:

http://www.mauleairinc.com/Maule_in_the ... nonball_5/

Remember, an aerodrome is simply defined as an area used for the taking off or landing of aircraft (land or sea). As soon as an aircraft takes off or lands, it is de jure an aerodrome. An airport is an aerodrome which is certified by Transport to meet certain standards.

Canadian pilots don't just fly from paved runways at certified airports, we also regularly (daily) fly from grass strips, gravel strips, farm fields and lakes (frozen and not).
