What did you pay for your last medical?
Living in a new city without flight benefits, I went searching for a new Medical Examiner so I could renew my medical.
I lucked out and found one at the medical building that's just a couple blocks away. Sweet! I'll be able to walk there. I booked an appointment and after getting everything sorted out the receptionist reminded me that if I missed the appointment I'd get charged $50 the next time for a missed appointment (Seinfeld anyone?) I quickly asked at the end of the phone conversation how much the medical would cost. "$150" was the reply and then she politely, but quickly, hung up on me as she switched to answer another call on her busy swtich board.
$150! It had been a few years since I had my last medical. Wow, I thought. Prices must have gone up quite a bit. But something wasn't sitting right. The most I had ever paid was $120 or so and that was in Expensive Toronto and with a doctor whom I had been going to for all my medicals. I also searched AvCanada and found inferences of people paying far less.
Back to the CAME database on TC's website. I found another doctor relatively nearby and gave them a call.
"How much for an aviation medical?" I asked.
"$75" was the reply.
I was surprised at the difference.
Having a doctor that you trust and can help keep you flying is an asset. However, having one doctor charge twice as much for a medical than another is pretty crazy if you ask me. While cheaper isn't necessarily better, that's a pretty big difference in price.

So, how much did you pay for your last medical?
Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
I don't even want to admit what I paid... I got scammed. Plus your $55 from Transport whatever that is for.
Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
Just renewed mine in Nov... think it was $90...
Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
It should be covered by the company you work for. Having said that, it does pay to call around. I've had anywhere from $50 including ECG to $125. The TC fee not-withstanding.
Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
$140 plus ECG ($22) plus TCA ($55).
Every 6 goddamned months. God it's a
pain in the *ss being over 40. Too bad
that Transport won't follow the ICAO
recommendation of class 1 medicals
every year for over 40.

Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
All over Ontario it has cost me about $110 or $115.
In BC I paid $45, talked about aerobatics and ski flying the whole time with the Dr., and even got invited out to his hangar for beer and a biplane ride.
If you find a Dr who is a pilot and likes pilots, you've hit the jackpot.
........Tc $55 fee? what TC $55 fee? I have no idea what you're talking about...............

$150, not that it matters as I expense it.
I haven't decided to pay the TC $55 yet...I'll consider it if they'll ever send me an invoice.

I usualy pay around $110 BUT this year $195
Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
I used to pay $300 in Montreal for TC and FAA meds, including ECG, and although I think that's expensive and usually takes about 1/2 hour, the office, the supplies, the ECG and the girl who hooks you up, the receptionist, the girl who stares at your pee and weighs you, the paperwork, the Doc's 15 minutes of peeking in orifices... its probably still a bargoon. Especially when you can pass it on to your employer!
Its the TC thing on top of that that's a senseless rip-off. The FAA ATPL has no medical fee.

$120 plus the $55 paper pushing fee
Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
It's ALL about Dr. Lower in Thunder Bay. Second busiest aviation doctor in Canada (behind AC's doc at YYZ, apparently), and if you've been to see him, you know why! Always an entertaining visit...
Swerved.

In a world full of people, only some want to fly. Isn't that crazy?
Re: What did you pay for your last medical?

Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
The cost was 225 Euro for me, but I didn't have to pay for it.
But even though I had them done in Europe..TC still tried to steal $55.00 off me for each medical I got.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.
After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Re: What did you pay for your last medical?
Was getting checked by him when he got a phone call... he put it on speaker-phone and continued to eat a sandwich while checking me over with a stethoscope, not even seeming to be listening to what the person was saying. After the person finished describing all her symptoms, which were quite personal, Dr. Lower simply replies "come in and we'll talk" (or something to that effect) and hangs up. No appointment necessary and $40 for him. Heard some people put it on OHIP through him.Swerved wrote:It's ALL about Dr. Lower in Thunder Bay.
