Ground crew make many different hand signals (!) but if you are looking for Marshalling Signals you will find them in AIR 1.8 of the AIM on the Transport Canada Civil Aviation website.

Keep in mind different carriers also have different hand signals. I know the normal stop for Westjet was the emergency stop for Northwest.

Here's a great instructional video for airplane marshalling.

Is WestJet a Canadian operator? If so, the normal stop for WestJet (& all other Canadian operators) should be 6(a) shown in AIR 1.8 of the TCCA AIM. Do Transport Canada marshalling signals differ from ICAO marshalling signals?

It's wonderful to have these fancy pictures so pilots know what the hand signals look like. The problem is that your average rampie making 8 bucks an hour doesn't spend a lot of time reading the AIM, and couldn't care less.

Supervisor in YYZ teaching new rampie how to marshal an airplane: "You wave your arms in the air and pretend you know what you're doing and they will pretend that they care". :smt014

And if you do not pay attention to the marshallers or they are not paying attention to your aircraft: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j_1D_n7fKU

While I do find the term "rampie" derogatory, the gist of your post is correct. When I did my training on the ramp, we were shown and were trained by company posters with the various hand signals. I honestly could not tell you if they came from the AIM or not, for the most part when I looked at a previous post they were fairly close to what I remember.

While I do find the term "rampie" derogatory...

Rampie derogatory? Then how about tarmackian.

I've worked the ramp for well over 15 years and I never met anyone that actually got offended by the term. That's just funny.

I do agree that there were a lot of variations on the whole martialling thing amongst us Flying Aircraft Ramp Technicians (FARTs).

GTAA has installed a Visual Docking Guidance System to marshall aircraft onto the gate and avoid confusing signals from a new marshaller. Now if we could get those wing walkers to actually pay attention, things would be great.

I prefer the term Ramp Rat myself, I spent 8 years of my life on the ramp in YWG.

It's always nice if they worked consistently. Some twit always drives over the controls for them or they're goofed.

I know more often than not for some reason the auto-marshaller on C34 would rarely work.

Did my almost three years at YYZ. It's nice to be behind a desk now... the back is much happier not being stuffed into a 737-800 headed to POS.
