July 29, 2009, Calgary - Kenn Borek Air Ltd. (KBA) has helped Maldivian Air Taxi (MAT) set up its operation over the last 15 years by providing crew and maintenance personnel. Effective Nov. 1, 2009, MAT will start operating solely on its own as KBA ceases providing the crew and maintenance to their organization.
MAT will continue with its own operation and KBA aircraft will be put in other operations worldwide. KBA has started operation in Vancouver with Harbour Air Ltd as one of its future endeavors. KBA has also placed an order for its third DC3-T while negotiating a fourth. It is also expanding its operation in the Antarctica for a total of 7 or more Twin Otters for the upcoming season.
Kenn Borek Air Ltd. will continue offering MAT support.

Does this mean that MAT will have to buy up to 25 twin otters before Nov 1? If so what will KBA do with the 15-25 Twin Otters they have in the MaldivesEPR wrote: MAT will start operating solely on its own as KBA ceases providing the crew and maintenance to their organization.

Re: Ken Borek Announcement
from what i hear before being let go, mat is keeping most of the twins that are there. Borek is getting back 3-5 twins as they are basically "owned" by borek. the others were sold to mat. this was happening back in April.

Interesting turn of events...
Can't see why HA would want to go back to -6's; the -3T's seem to be doing quite well for them, and there's only one engine and pilot...

What's even more exciting is they are doubling the Basler fleet.
Re: Ken Borek Announcement
As for the twins at HA, they are being used for the Toba contract and the occasional charter. No talk so far of twins on the sked. Back on topic.....how is MAT planning on crewing all the twins when the KBA crews leave?

Re: Ken Borek Announcement
In a glut market for pilots, MAT will have no problem keeping most of the pilots. KBA will not absorb 100 pilots, so the low timers will have no choice but to stay with MAT. Don't be in a rush to send those resumes. They have so many captains that there has not been a single upgrade in over a year, and none on the horizon.

Thats insane! Im glad I got in and out and had the time of my life.....but would hate to be stuck there now! Good luck to MAT to operate on its own.....cause its gonna cost them!

Our industry is slowing down for a bit, might have to put up longer waits in the right seat. Sucks I know but this is aviation and these cycles do happen. Grab a comfy seat and ride it out.
There are worse places to be stuck, like an E.I line.
