Garmin WAAS GPS (400/500)
Can anyone tell me if, when you manually disable the WAAS, whether or not it automatically reactivates when you turn the unit OFF/ON.
ie do you have to manually disable it after every power down? (if you want if OFF). Poor WAAS reception can cause problems in the far north.

I can tell you that, for the unit I use at least, it does not reactivate itself.

Your wife has mentioned you have problems activating your unit
Re: Garmin WAAS GPS (400/500)
Yes you can disable WAAS on the Garmin 400. It's in the setup pages... SBAS Selection. It will not re-activate after power-down.
It's a must up north... otherwise you lose reception every 10 minutes.

Wide Area Augmentation System
Basically an enhanced GPS system. Uses ground stations in addition to the satellites to correct for any errors in the signals to allow for more precision. Where they exist, if you have a capable unit, you can shoot an LPV (lateral with precision vertical) approach. An LPV is basically a GPS approach with a glidepath like an ILS. Right now they can have DA's as low as 250' I believe. There are several ground stations located across Canada and the US to provide coverage for I believe all of the US and probably almost all of the SDA in Canada. The beauty is, it allows any airport within the coverage area to have an ILS-like precision approach without the cost of installing one (the number I heard for an ILS was over a 1000000).

Thanks for the responses
A little investigation can save a lot of cash.
PS Garmin & company always promise the world but don"t always deliver.

I just couldn't believe that Garmin did not test for that kind of a problem...
