Plane crashed with 51 aboard in Venezuela

Reuters
By FABIOLA SANCHEZ, Associated Press Writer – 16 mins ago
CARACAS, Venezuela – A plane carrying 51 people crashed Monday in eastern Venezuela, and officials said at least 21 people survived.
The French-built ATR-42 from the state airline Conviasa crashed about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the eastern city of Puerto Ordaz at about 10 a.m. (1430 GMT), Transportation Minister Francisco Garces told state television. He said the plane went down on the property of the state-run Sidor steel foundry.
Rescue workers were tending to injured victims, and at least 23 survivors were taken to hospitals, Bolivar state Gov. Francisco Rangel Gomez told the Venezuela-based television network Telesur.
Two of the injured died, while 21 others were being treated, hospital official Yanitza Rodriguez said.
The plane, a twin-engine turboprop, was carrying 47 passengers and four crew members, Rangel Gomez said.
He said that Conviasa Flight 2350 had taken off from Margarita Island and crashed shortly before reaching its destination, the airport of Puerto Ordaz. Garces had initially said the plane went down shortly after takeoff.
It was unclear what caused the crash.

From the crash photo on the Toronto Star website (http://www.thestar.com/news/world/artic ... st-13?bn=1) it looks like this might be Conviassa's Dash-7 (note the exhaust stacks over the wings and the black paint aft of the stacks).

Conviassa has at least 1 of these. Does anyone know if it is the one that belongs (belonged) to Voyageur (4V)??

Good call! This is definitely not an ATR-42 - the tailplane is totally different (the vert stab extends above the horizontal stab on the ATR, it does not on the dash 7/8).

Looks like sloppy reporting!

As well, if one looks at all the pics, the dash-8 pic looks like it was taken w/ the a/c down on a runway or road whereas the pics from the other news articles has an a/c that came down in a scrap metal yard. The a/c that came down in the scrap metal yard definately looks like an ATR judging from the cabin door positioned near the tail section. IMHO, unfortunately does look like an ATR went down.

1st photo from the yahoo report is definitely a Dash7 (two engine pods left side of fuselage, as well as another visible on the right). 2nd to 4th photos are clearly not of the 7, as the part of the fuselage shown has two wheel wells in it (on the 7, the mains retract into #2 and 3 engine nacelles), much like how they would be found on the ATR-42.

The Toronto Star photo is YV1003 Dash 7 s/n 102, landing at Palomar on 15 Decemeber 2005, right main collapsed, aircraft was repaired Jan 2006 - last spotted at North Bay at Voyageurs facility - and noted on 2008 sitting on concrete blocks and presumed to be withdrawn from use.

Today's accident (not the Star photo from 2005!!) was YV1010 an ATR-320 s/n 371.

And Yes, YV1003 is Voyageurs ex- C-FEDO.

It's sad to see, especially when it's the type you're flying. Condolences to all the victims families.

The picture of the Dash-7 was in fact from years ago. Here's the full photo sequence of that gear collapse:

That Dash-7 is back in service now:
