D-IAYL Premier 1A fatal crash in St. Moritz

Post by bizjets101 »

A German registered Premier 1A arriving at Samedan Airport, St. Moritz Switzerland - crashed just beyond the end of the runway - during what appears to be an aborted landing.

Crew of two on board, both fatal - aircraft was arriving from Zagreb, and would have departed to Rome. Was operated by Windrose Air.

'First fatal accident involving a Premier jet to date.'

Update; press report aircraft was aborting the landing when it contacted power lines.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e2faDWysBk this video from a Hawker shows the approach,

On a beautiful day, what an incredible airport to fly out of, looks a lot like Lugano up near Lake Como. Amazing.

Edit; Latest information, aircraft was in a tight low level turn when it impacted the ground. It did not hit high level power cables as first reported, but sliced thru 3 low level cables at the crash site.

I've been into this airport before. It's the highest elevation airport in Europe with a relatively short runway and no IFR approach. Not one to trifle with in snow if you are unfamiliar. Or even if you are familiar for that matter.

RIP.

Ditto that!

Weather looks iffy in the video.

Made a low level right hand turn?, struck ground - notes there
is damage to power lines, and transformer.

From the report:

"...thick driving snow, sides of the valley only vaguely visible from the centre of the village, so generously speaking approx. 1 km visibility."

"It was snowing and the visibility was bad."

"From the Bever side, visibility was poor. In my estimation one could see about 1 km from the Bever side."

"At the time of the accident, visibility was 500 to 1000 metres, in my opinion."

D‐IAYL Initiating the base turn to the right
at the end of the downwind leg with a
max. bank angle of 62° at a decreasing
speed of 106 kt (corresponding stall
speed: 137 kt).
Alert of the EGPWS: "bank angle!“

79 pages of fluff when 1 would easily do. Pilot was flying VFR in IMC and lost control.
There's someone on this forum who keeps saying that there will be no new causes of accidents. They are right.
