$150 per year for all of Canada.

Electronic flight planning should be coming shortly.

Interesting timing. I am a ForeFlight user but was always disappointed with the lack of Canadian content.

Just announced: http://jeppdirect.jeppesen.com/legal/ch ... jepptc.jsp Looks like were now going to have to choose. Hopefully some of the magazines or electronic rags will do a side by side comparison.

The next step is for Foreflight to gain access to the Canadian VFR charts. So far they only have coverage from Ontario east to Nova Scotia using FAA data. I heard from a NavCanada source that they will soon have the Canadian charts converted to digital format and have had discussions with Foreflight regarding supplying them with the data.

I just fired up my iPad and downloaded the latest ForeFlight updates - all the CAP Plates are there. Great Stuff!!

I am only a regular HD subscriber ($75 per year). The $150 Pro version gives you the geo-referenced approach plates or is there some other subscription with extra goodies for Canada?

Just downloaded Update 2 for the Airport data and sure enough all plates are there. Its unfortunate that you cant download the plates by the province like you can for the US, you have to look at each plate individually for it to be saved to the Ipad unless i'm missing something. Haven't been able to find the Canadian IFR low's and high's to download yet. I looked very briefly and find it very weird that there hasn't been any formal announcement of this service from Foreflight or from Nav Canada. Any tips or links on the maps or press releases would be greatly appreciated.

No, not that I can see/find so just the plates. In terms of the regular CAP volumes it is not a digital reproduction of the book - just the plates in what looks like a good quality scan of the original.

Does it include the CFS? Was anyone able to download the LO and HI charts?

I do not have an iPad, but would consider one if all charts and publications were included.

Looks like the Canadian plates have no geo-referencing. I am hoping that is in the works. I read on the media annoucement that the CFS and VNCs are arriving in the near future.

You like Foreflight, but do you wish you had another tablet solution (perhaps smaller?) for your cockpit?
I am a software developer interested in creating the best tool for the cockpit.

Please spend 12 minutes on the following survey to help me understand your needs and your thoughts on the limitations of existing solutions.

The latest update (v4.4) has a new Documents section (iPAD version only) where you can (among all sorts of FAA stuff) download the latest CAP GEN and Chart Legends.

Additionally, I also noticed that on the Canadian Airport listings the A/FD section has been replaced with the term CFS. No CFS data is being displayed here unless there is spill over from the A/FD. Sign of things to come?? So, I emailed ForeFlight support and here is their answer:
NavCanada is working to make their VNC charts and CFS available electronically. No release dates have been set as of yet, but NavCanada has been receptive to customer feedback and are aware of the demand. We will make announcements via our newsletter when we know more!
ForeFlight users stay tuned!

Are you required to have paper charts on board as a backup? Knowing TC's paranoia over the "new" this wouldn't be too far fetched?

Doc, our company (702) is just finishing our phase-in period to using iPads as EFBs. Transport Canada has a bunch of guidelines to follow, which include training, back-ups, end of day reports, blurb in the Ops Manual, maintaining a list of approved apps, etc. Every pilot has been issued an iPad, and each aircraft that is flown single pilot also has an iPad, for which the pilot is responsible for keeping updated/charged, thus always having a minimum of two EFBs on board. (We have the advantage that typically, one pilot is flying that one aircraft for several weeks at a time so it makes it very simple.) We have the ability to charge the iPads while airborne. We keep all our SOPs, QRH, checklists, AIM, DG guidelines, CFS, CapGen, company docs, training forms, etc etc on the iPads as well (using the GoodReader app), which sync to an FTP site for document control. It's very slick.

One of the reasons we chose the iPad as opposed to a Windows based tablet is that it rarely crashes and if it does, it takes seconds to reboot itself. The Windows-based tablets (one of which I tried on a North Atlantic ferry flight) would constantly crash, freeze and need restarting, which in some cases, took up to TEN MINUTES... I was very glad we had chart back-ups on that trip. We've used the iPads for regular operations for a while now, including on several long ferry flights, and the only complaint is that after you get outside of North America, you have to use the JeppFD app, which is far inferior to the very powerful Foreflight.

So to say it simply, the only paper we now carry are VFR maps as necessary, but only until NavCanada finishes digitizing those charts too.

In case you are interested, the following is the Advisory Circular regarding the use of EFBs. In general, I found the regulatory requirements surrounding their use surprisingly relaxed compared to the approach towards other high tech solutions being introduced in aviation.

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/o ... 0-1348.htm

I think they not only introduce a level of efficiency and accessibility, but from a management perspective offer a cost saving measure over the long term as well as a simpler way of controlling and tracking documents. After starting to use these, I like it a lot, although there are still a few things that I like to use paper for like writing clearances.

I made a blank PDF document with about a dozen pages in it and imported it into GoodReader. Using the stylus, it's completely replaced my notepad. You don't need a flashlight to see it at night, and there are no scraps of paper to lose!

I've been using FltPlan.com for the past couple months on my android tablet. It's not quite as refined as the IPAD version, but it gets the job done..and for free!

For now I use the "Topographic maps Canada" 4 inch to the mile maps are better then those 8 inch to mile things anyway. Also does gps and there is a ruler to get distances that works like a string not just straight line. All free maps to download and just load the area you need. Also has strips that have been removed from the CFS and some that were never in it. Also (seems to work only online) is navmonster, They have WAC Vnc's.

There is also "Air Navigation Pro" for ipad (and soon Android), but I haven't tried it. Apparently it has maps of Canada including airports.

Unfortunately nobody has Canadian VFR charts, and they won't until NavCanada pulls its head out of its backside and makes it a priority. We never should have handed the mapping data (CFS, charts) to them on a platter. It should have been made available freely as it is in the US. At least until the FAA starts charging for it there too...
