RAIC Wait times
Hey all.
I was chosen for a job on the condition that I get my RAIC card and applied for that today at pass control here in ottawa.
I was just curious if any one knew roughly how long this takes to process. I know it "varies" but an idea is better then none

I did it about 2 months ago in Ottawa, it only took about 3 weeks or so. Not sure if it makes any difference for new or renewal though, mine was renewal.

I just received mine after waiting nearly 8 months. I hope you have better luck than I.

My original pass was for Thunder Bay and it took six months. God only knows why it took six months to process.

1 month YWG, and ive heard upwards of 8 months to depends on the person.

Your temporary one should be issued within 2 weeks or so, however it will be an escort required pass. Your permanent should be within 4-6 weeks. At least thats how long mine took. When I upgraded from a YWG only to Canada wide it took a week.

Escort Required passes were all changed to be Search Required last year, or so I was told. When I got my Yellow pass, I was one of the first at my airport to not require an escort, only the search. Is that not something done nationwide?

Thanks for all your quick responses. It looks like the start date for the job is some time in Nov so about 6 weeks away. I feel like I have a simple form to do for example never lived outside of Canada nor have I been married ever
Could someone explain to me why someone would get an "escort" pass. My assumption is that they have been approved but they are making the persons permaninte card.

You'll be given an escort-required yellow pass in the interim to use while your info is being verified. It allows you to go on with your job while you're awaiting the clearance. In YWG, the yellow escort-required pass is still being used, not sure what it'll be in Ottawa. A permanent card takes all of 10 minutes to make, but only after the security clearance has been granted.

My pass took exactly 1 month, but someone else I worked with said his pass took 8 months. Apparently, it depends if you have ever been outside the country in the last two years, and obviously if you have ever had a brush with the law. But if your history is clean I suspect a month is standard.

I thought all RAIC cards were Canada wide? RAIC aircrew, I believe, are Canada wide, but only as a flight crew on a ramp and in a terminal. I don't believe it allows you to access these areas through security checkpoints (like a baggage room door) only if you're escorted (so where a ramp attendant can access through checkpoints, you would have to be with one, just like how gate agents aren't allowed through there by themselves).
A RAIC allows you at the airport you work at. Canada wide red pass (non-aircrew) allow you access to all areas at ALL airports. You have to have a valid reason to obtain this I believe (my company security manager has one to allow her to check out all of our operational airports).

46.1 A person must not enter or remain in a restricted area unless the person is

Going to vary airport to airport, no absolute standard. Some places don't have the resources others do.

It gives you access to areas relevant to your work, there are always further restricted places. Winnipeg has changed to a blue pass, Kitchener uses a purple one, Toronto has 3 different colours, whereas the Canada wide is standardized with the maple leaf, and white front.. As stated above, an aircrew pass will state AIRCREW on it, mine states AME. When I go to a different airport I have to check in with their security and they will grant me access to the areas I need to work in. The biggest difference I was told is the RAIC uses more biometric data encoded into the card than the older red pass.

Question to tag on to this post...how difficult is it to transfer a raic when you switch flying jobs and remain based at the same airport? Any idea what the process is like? (cyyz)

If youre staying at the same airport, it's very simple. Make an appointment at the GTAA office and bring a signed copy of the short form from your employer (its valid for 7 days from when they sign it). You should be able to walk out with a new RAIC in hand. I just transfered my YUL RAIC to a YYZ one. I called the GTAA pass office today (30 minutes on hold) and they need you to make an appointment for the application (despite having a RAIC on file) AND another one to pick it up. TC needs to reactivate it since I had surrendered it a few months ago. Why I need an appointment I have no idea. I'll spend more time waiting than I will to get the action form processed. I can understand if I am applying for a new clearance with the 5-year history form because they need to do fingerprinting but for a simple handing in of a form why should I need an appointment?
BTW: You get a yellow pass right away and you'll get the full pass once your clearance is reactivated (in my case) or approved (new pass holder). As usual, the GTAA is backlogged for pass appointments (probably because the 4 clerks work for 10 minutes, take a 40 minute break, work for 5 more minutes, go for lunch, work for 5 more minutes, take a break, etc). Can you tell I hate the pass-office. There is no reason I should wait for an hour just to see a clerk for 5 minutes...

I luckily got mine in a week or 2 because it was rushed for the Olympics, but I know a guy who is going on 10 months in Vancouver and still hasn't received his.
