HEY! Who Bombed my In-laws?

Post by 'CauseTheCaravanCan »

The grass fires in Tolstoy got out of control last weekend, about 1 mile from my In-laws who have a second home/farm down there.
So, they went with the rest of the locals to have a peek.
The were all facing west watching the local fire crew withdraw from their attempts at suppression, when the one guy watching the action, but facing east, yells "DUCK!!!!"
Nobody moves in time, and an Air Tractor comes and dumps a shit-load of red Fire Retardant on our folks and their neighbors!!! Them and their cars were COVERED. Hahahaha

After talking to a former boss of mine, who has played host to the Air Tractor guys before, I heard it's actually first priority
to bomb the looky-loos!

I'll post the photo, when my father in law gets home and e-mails it to me.

Hey Jon-Air guys, say it aint so!

Well, that answers a question I've always wondered about... I guess it won't kill you.

Maybe they thought that the 'looky-loos' were the idiots who lit the fires in the first place  - and are thus deserving of a thump on the head...

Edited to add: in light of Xs's comment below, the above comment is meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

I'm all for low level flying and such, however if this happened to me I would make it my
Mission to find the company/pilot, take pictures of us/ car and report them to Transport than press for the fullest charges possible.

I'm all for good gags and this in my books is straight unprofessional. Wanna show off fine but don't dump shit on them. Frickin Cowboys

That cannot have been intentional in this day and age?
Definitely take photos and inform the fire service, they will compensate/repair any damage. If it was some cowboy who did that he will likely be fired. The retardant over-spray won't hurt you but it is corrosive, even though it may contain corrosion inhibitors. If it was water/foam, that is also corrosive. A direct hit, where a couple of tons of water hit you at 120 knots or more will definitely kill. Mistake or prank? Somebody is in deep, not the 'targets.'

The same thing happened to me when I lived near the departure path in Prince George.
A tracker was on climb out for a fire when his tank dumped by accident.(Mechanical) The red retardent coated everything in the yard, including two German Shepherd dogs just prepared for a major dog show. My wife had her work cut out for her rewashing and grooming them.
As corrosive as it is, the retardent caused a wheel barrow to corrode badly that was in the yard and we never rinsed off.
It is also a good fertilizer, The weeds grew, well--, like weeds that year.
As a reward to my wife, one of the dogs took best in show.

I too call BS. Has anyone ever seen the demo they do with the buckets? from 300ft at 120kts.. theres NOTHING LEFT. Your inlaws would have taken some serious injury.. thats a lot of water mass at a high rate of speed.

Even then, our tanker boys are professionals and not akin to this kind of hijinx in this day and age. To those that want to jump on them. Take a hike, it could very easily have been 1) an exageration 2) a mechanical fault 3) not noticing the lookie loos SO FREAKIN CLOSE TO AN ACTIVE FIRE SITE!

Avcan never ceases to amaze me. But whatevs.. I was accused of buzzing someone 'super low' one day.. and it was interesting to note that the radar returns with my TX ON showed 1000 AGL. If I was super low.. you'd have to duck ;)

More likely a variable tailwind.

Anyone check wunderground to see if any performance decreasing windshears caught the pilot off guard causing him to drop the materials directly on the looky-loos?

How many times am I going to see mention of a variable tailwind without explanation? What is the inside joke here?
