Chief Pilot exam
Anybody here ever written the Chief pilot exam at Transport? I have the Study and Reference guide but I'm wondering if that's all I'll need, other than the actual reference material of course. There are only about 90 questions so I'm wondering if there is more to it. Any input would be appreciated.

Use that study guide. Study the answers. The questions on the exam are identical to the guide. They choose 30 questions from those 90-100 in the guide.

The exam is easy. The interview is a bigger deal. Better know your ops manual and how your company works!!

A Chief pilots position is a political appointment with none of the perks of politics.

Are you insinuating that the Chief Pilot position is a worthless one and the flight department would be better with no Chief or focal point for the pilots?

No that is not what I said.
What I am saying is there are political limitations to how effective a chief pilot can be, especially in the 702 /703 /704 companies.
Aviation is a bastardization of law because TCCA can act as a law onto their own.
If my memory is correct .......I can not think of a more arrogant example of this than when a M.P. complained that the former DGCA was in contempt of Parliament during hearings on the implantation of SMS some years ago.
So if at the top you have that mentality what do you think a chief pilot could do if it became a political decision that determines the outcome?
Can you list all the reasons why anyone would want to be a chief pilot in Canada at the 702 / 703 / 704 level?

Well ., I haven't had the number of employers that you have had, so I guess I'm not as much of an expert then either.
If a Chief Pilot is merely a TC requirement in the eyes of the management, then yes he or she is a political appointment without the teeth to make any difference.
If however, like any Chief Pilot I've had or been, he or she is a manager within the company management structure with the task of guiding the other pilots along the straight and narrow as well as keeping the company out of trouble pilot wise, well then he or she is much more than a political type. The Chief Pilot can make a lot of money (or cost a lot) by crew scheduleing, training, hiring and a miriad of other efficiencies.
He or she is also usually tasked with overseeing SOPs, Checklists and so forth. All of which will contribute to a smooth operation.
Would one want to be a Chief Pilot? Depends.
Like the say, What do I know, My experience means nothing.

Smooth Operation = Sometimes walking with the wind rather than against it = More Money.
