Visit to Bowen Island - land at CZBB or CYPK?

Post by Marc_CYBW »

I'm planning a Canada Day weekend trip from Calgary to visit a friend on Bowen Island. Will probably fly IFR but only in reasonable weather. Should I go to Boundary Bay or Pitt Meadows for easiest ground travel?

Thanks. Marc

CYPK

Go off peak hours. It is easy to get on the highway 1, and 30-40 minutes later you are in Horseshoe Bay for the ferry.

I would say it depends on how you plan to get to Horseshoe Bay.

1. If your friend is picking you up, consider Squamish. It is a VFR Daytime Airport but by far the closest to Horseshoe Bay by drive time and ease of traffic. Drive time 45min

2. If you are taking transit to the Ferry you would have to go to ZBB as I don't think there is any bus service out at YPK. Transit time 2hours

3. If you are renting a car YPK is your easiest drive down Highway 1. Drive time 1 hour.

I second Squamish if you have transport from there. The views are spectacular, not just at the airport but on the highway down to the ferry, there's way less traffic, also both in the air and on the road, and there's no congested airspace or control zones with which to deal. You should look into the price of fuel at each of the airports as well, because the last time I flew into the Lower Mainland the larger airports were charging a premium over those in the rest of BC.

3rd vote for Squamish. It's less than 45 min to horseshoe bay with the highway improvements that were done a couple years ago.

There's three spots to land on Bowen. There all great spots, and easy to get in and out of. Two are on top, and one is on the lower mountain with road access and a big paved landing area.

Could you add in here the lat and long?

Another vote for Squamish. Nice views and easy commute to the ferry.

Those look like good spots for a helicopter Mole.

No mention was made of the aircraft type being used.

I have flown over Bowen lots, but do not recall a spot to land.
Has any one done it recently?

Well there's an Enterprise Rental Car office in Squamish. I never used Squamish airport myself but compare to the CZBB and CYPK, it may not be a bad idea. Depending on the time of day you land, the traffic can get pretty nasty trying to get from CZBB / CYPK to the ferry terminal. Also, don't use Budget Car Rental in BC.

Another option is Sechelt Airport ..... I believe there is a bus service from Sechelt to Langdale. then you get the ferry to Horseshoe Bay and transfer to the Bowen Island ferry. The advantage of Sechelt is that, generally, there are no wx problems, where as Squamish can be iffy at times. Of course, in the summer there should not be any wx problems. Just another option.
Happy landings! :)
