This video is from CYQS St. Thomas, ON during the Wings N' Wheels airshow in 2009. The main runway is 5050' X 100' and the C-17 uses about half of the length. I was working for the airport at the time and went out to do a FOD check before the Snowbirds did their show as they were the next act. Glad we did as the first 600' of runway lights and threshold lights were obliterated due to the high thrust. I have a half melted runway light lens cap as a souvenir paperweight.

Here's a DHC-5 on our 3000 x 75 runway. Length wasn't a problem, but width was.....

Took a C-130 in and out of CFB Borden. Does that count!

Wow - some pretty nice technique there, particularly the big-time flare after he'd planted the mains.

YUP, actually wanted to land there. To depart had to open the rear ramp and back up til the loadmaster stopped us with the mains at the edge of the asphalt! Remember...runway behind you is no good.......... :lol:

While an ATCer at YED working the Sunday day shift had a civil plane land and taxi clear. When he saw all the C-130`s on the ramp, realized...whoops...wrong airport. Taxied back to the rwy and took off. Never a word from him. Turned out he was looking to land at YEG, 20 mi south! In those days all 3 Edmonton airports, YEG,YXD and YED had the same runway orientation 11/29. He eventually found YEG safely and sent an apology thru the tower guys at YEG :rolleyes:

I remember flying into Melville Hall in Dominica was pretty tight considering an overrun would put you off a cliff into the atlantic. At the time they were running 727's in there.

Aerodynamic braking...when you have a slick/soft surface like grass, wheel brakes on something that big aren't as effective...

Is it just me or did it seem like there was a significant amount of the landing roll with the plane skidding sideways (nose left, towards the right side of the screen)?

I think the DC-10 into Carp could beat that one. After all they had 5,600 feet at QRA. Carp is 3,900 feet.

These are some really impressive landings. They got me thinking, how many of these were hand flown? With no auto thingys or NAV aids and what not? Most responders here seem equally impressed at how well these landings turned out, but over in another thread some Bananna man poster gets a new one ripped because he was talking about hand flying aproaches in some big jumbo jet. I don't quite understand you pilot folk. Now I really don't know anything about airplanes so please correct me if just have no clue at all. were any electronic gizmos used to land these big planes in small airports?
