Living in hotel rooms

Post by ericrobitaille »

Going to fly a contract in northern canada for a about 2 months, living in a hotel room. I'm thinking :

-Bring a laptop to browse the net.
-Bring study material
-Mabe get a RC Heli
-Clean the plane
-Explore

Trying to make a longer list.

If you don't already (and you didn't mention it) this would be a great time to start running and/or biking for fitness. Running is relatively cheap and very portable and you can continue to do it almost anywhere future contracts take you. Biking is a bit tougher as you have to get your bicycle to where you are.

Just remember to take it slow at first and don't run too far or too fast initially to avoid excessive soreness and especially shin splints. There's lots of sites on the web that can give you pointers - http://www.runnersworld.com/the-startin ... exercising

It will kill some time and contribute to better health at the same time - woo-hoo!

Unless you're getting a cheapo counter-rotating prop heli from radioshack it might be better to get an airplane. I think parkzone makes some nice 2.4 Ghz micro cubs.

http://www.parkzone.com/Products/Defaul ... ID=PKZ1100

Only $159 but you can get a micro heli for that price too.

Don't be afraid to ask for an upgrade, especially a kitchenette, if it's available.

You might want to consider getting your own programmable remote (a good one).

It pays to be friendly with the staff.

If you don't already, get familiar with torrents, and download as much as you think you might want, and more that you don't BEFORE you go. This includes TV shows, movies, and porn if you're so inclined. Forget 250GB, bring a 1TB external USB drive.

Northern internet generally does suck, but late at night and mid-day are generally good times to download.

Try to find something of interest to you to do away from the hotel. Try to eat meals away from the hotel, unless you're cooking, and keep the delivery to when you really need it.

Just take it easy, enjoy the flying to the absolute max, as can only truly be done in Northern Canada (this from someone who flew the bush till I was 25, and then, and still is, flying all over the world) for the next couple months.

Try not to ruin it by fucking up and you'll never forget the time you're going to have up there!

I'm jealous!

Because the contra -rotating types are a bit of fun for the first few minutes, then boredom sets in quickly.

The Hobbyzone Champ is hard to beat in the fun for money factor.

Depends on your definition of northern Canada... YRB... Then yes to the 1TB drive... if It's something like YDA... Best city in canada to spend a summer in, hands down. Just enjoy it!

Enjoy your flying. What will you be flying and at which town/resort?

Make sure you bring a zip lock bag to put your tv remote in so you don't actually touch the thing.

BEDBUGS

Put all of your stuff (bags etc..) in the bathtub before you step any further into the room. Then, strip the bed(s) and make a thorough inspection of the frame, boxspring, and mattress. Do the same to the chest of drawers before you use them. You do not want those little buggers getting a ride back to your house...

I always take along my own soap and shampoo, as motel stuff is cheap and nasty after a while. (If you're feeling charitable, collect the motel soap/shampoo over the period of your stay, and donate it to your local homeless or women's shelter once you get back to your home...)
