CAP and RCAP changes August 22 and October 17

Post by KK7 »

Not sure if this has been posted yet, did a search nothing came up.

There will be phased in major changes to the CAP and RCAPs starting August 22nd, 2013 then October 17th, 2013.

Thoughts? Personally, I wish they would align more with the Jepp plates.

A snippet, see link above to see examples of the plates.
On 22 August 2013 and 17 October 2013, NAV CANADA will be introducing an improved product
specification for the Canada Air Pilot (CAP) and Restricted Canada Air Pilot (RCAP) publications. In 2011,
NAV CANADA’s aeronautical information services (AIS) undertook an initiative to modernize the format of the
CAP and RCAP publications. The results of this initiative are structured products with increased consistency
and overall usability.

CHANGE AREAS

The publication improvements focus on several key areas:
• Restructuring the depiction of communication information;
• Introducing an Approach Summary section of information to Instrument Approach Procedures (IAP);
• Depicting all charts to scale;
• Establishing a new chart ordering and identification standard;
• Introducing Flight Safety Foundation Stabilized Approach Principles into the depiction;
• Introducing human factors into the depiction; and
• Increasing overall consistency.

Instrument Approach Procedures (IAP)
▪ Minimum Sector Altitude (MSA) Quadrants
▪ Expanded Plan View and Scaled Information
▪ Constant Descent Angle Info
▪ Replacement of Landing Chart with Lighting Diagram

COPTER
▪ Similar structure and information as IAP
▪ Accompanying Visual Approach chart

Standard Terminal Arrival (STAR)
▪ Splitting depictions into En Route Transition and Arrival pages
▪ Depicting information to scale
▪ En Route Transition identification box
▪ Removal of route description page

Standard Instrument Departure (SID)
▪ Splitting depictions into Departure and En Route Transition pages
▪ Depicting information to scale
▪ En Route Transition identification box

Aerodrome Charts
▪ Incorporation of lighting diagrams on runways

I haven't seen anything official yet but I'm expecting an update to the AIC to appear on the 22nd.

I've flipped through the new CAPs that come into effect on the 22nd and no changes to the format that was expected have been made. I'm assuming that NavCanada is running behind schedule and hasn't completed all of the new charts. I have no idea if they will make the October deadline (and if so, which CAPs will be updated).

I guess that we'll know more in a day or two but the changes aren't coming this time around.

My company was briefed on them last month. We were provided a powerpoint from Nav Can along with the PDF. Also said most of the small sections of the CAP will be done first, meaning Ontario and Quebec last.

I've been told that it's Transport Canada, not Nav Canada, that is causing the delay of the release of the new CAP/RCAP. Since they are the regulator, they have the final say.

I like the new way that step-down altitudes are depicted in the section; I don't like the way the MSA 25nm is split up.

What do you all like and dislike?
