Flying and Golf

Post by Lotro »

In August my "dad" celebrated his 70th birthday and I talked about doing something cool. He suggested we fly somewhere and then Golf and then fly home combing some of our favourite hobbies.

So I'm looking for a recommendation for an airport that's close to a golf course, or even on a golf course!

I looked into Deerhurst, but I see their strip is closed. Elmhirst might've been an option but it's a grass strip and (as mentioned previously) I'm not allowed to take the plane there by the club (their plane, their rules).

Anyone have any suggestions? Ontario or maybe parts of New York would work? Preferably no more than a 2 hr flight from CYKZ.

Tks,

~Lotro

In Sarnia Greenwood Golf Course is on the approach to 33. Course is pretty good but has been hit hard by the Emerald Ash Borer. $37 weekdays for 18 w/cart and lunch (sandwich and a drink) was on the radio last time I was home. Many other great courses around, some pricier (Sawmill, Huron Oaks) and some along the same price as Greenwood (Bonnie Doon, St. Clair Parkway). PM for more info if needed!

Don't take my word for it but I think the golf course in Wiarton is close to the airport... nice views of Georgian Bay too! and not too expensive.
Now if you're feeling adventurous this might be your place.

Morrisburg Airport CNS8 just west of Cornwall is adjacent to the Upper Canada Golf Course, easily walkable. They include "By Air" as a means to get to the golf course in their "how to get here" page:

If you ever decide to do a two or three day trip with your dad,
here's one you should not miss.

Brunsville, North Carolina.

You need a check out to land there.

Try Kingston, just about an hour from cykz. Follow the shoreline for an easy and scenic flight.

Edit: Golf course is just walking out of the airport, less than 100 meters

Killarney...nice scenery in air and on ground, golf, fish & chips at channel or dinner at Killarney Mountain Lodge - they pick you up at airport too. (Not sure what the golf course is like) Closer? Wiarton.

Perhaps a bit farther than you want but stopped here twice en-route to Oshkosh. KMBL - Great friendly airport with no fees. There are many great golf courses nearby and a Bucket List one (Arcadia Bluffs -http://arcadiabluffs.com/ ) 30 minutes away. The Golf Pro at Manistee National ( http://www.manisteenational.com/ ) coincidentally is a pilot and will organize everything and will even pick you up at the airport. PM if you want more details or contact info.

It's a shame the airstrip at Bigwinn Island on Lake of Bays isn't operational. That would be a phenomenal fly in golf day.

I second this one! Fantastic course. It is currently hosting a PGA Canada tournament. Course is in great shape. You can also find it on golfnow.com

Careful - I flew by morrisburg on Friday and
there were big white X's on both ends of the
runway. Pavement looked ok from 1000 AGL.

I would second CYSN/Niagara would be easy shots. A rental car would bring you endless possibilities for a weekend. Green fees aren't as bad as everyone says either.

Speaking of golf, anyone got good tips for hitting a draw? I've gotten my slice straightened out a lot more than previous years, although is still find it on the other fairway once and awhile. I just wish I could hit a draw.

My putting is absolutely horrendous...

Pull your back foot back half a step at setup, focus on keeping your swing a little more shallow and an inside out swing path.

good tips for hitting a draw?
Depending on your swing arc, something as simple as turning your upper (left) hand (right handed golfer) inwards can promote a draw.
