CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
Good Morning
I am relocating out to Kelowna in the near future and need to get my Piper Cherokee 180 out there.
I don't have a lot of mountain time or hours so I am looking to possibly get a co pilot.
Is anyone interested in coming with?
Routing will probably be CZPC - CYBW - Follow Highway #1 Out to CYLW
I would cover expenses for the person to return to CYYC via Westjet or Air Canada.
Thanks

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
I used to live in CZPC and have flown the route a few times. I also flew CYYC to CYLW almost daily in a pressurized twin and in my opinion, CZPC, Crossnest Pass to Cranbrook then Castlegar and direct to CYLW is a piece of cake providing the weather is good. CZPC winds and turbulance through the Pass can be bit of a problem if there are roll clouds and high winds near Turtle Mountain/ Blaremore but beyond that, no big deal. If you want, you can follow the Trench north to Golden, follow Hwy 1 to Enderby and then down the Okanogan to CYLW. I would wait till you can climb to 10,500 and follow Hwy 3 over the Creston Salmo Pass and then go direct. The mountains are much lower once past Castlegar. Just wait till the weather is good VFR. It is an enjoyable trip in VFR weather but a knuckle biter in low cloud and rain. The Cherokee 180 will handle the altitude real fine and there are lots of places to land if you get tired. Hypoxia is not a great big deal if you stay below 12,500 for short burst but if you start to feel unwell, either land or get to lower altitude. Most people in reasonable health should be able to work for short periods at 10,000 feet above the altitude you live at but 14,000 without oxygen is a bit much so try to stay around 10,500 or 12,500 as long as necessary and then drop down to a lower altitude. Just never leave with a definate time restraint or something that will require pushing beyond your comfort zone. I can assure if you stay VFR in your comfort zone, it will be a fun trip.
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
Oldtimer's got it right. Don't go on a windy day, low ceilings, or temperature dewpoint spread of less than 5 degrees.
I would add that if the Wx isn't spectacular, from Creston head up Kootenay Lake to CAR2, West Arm to CZNL, and then follow the Kootenay River to CYCG. From there you can either follow HWY3 to Grand Forks and Osoyoos then north up the Okanagan Valley past CYYF to CYLW, or you could head up Arrow Lake to Edgewood, and then follow HWY6 through Lumby and Vernon to Kelowna.
Plenty of places to stop and tie up for the night if you need to.
Have fun!

First of all Thank You to everyone for the advice.
A couple options have surfaced, but either way I will try and keep everyone posted and maybe even attempt to upload a couple pictures.
Cheers

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
I have decided I am heading out April 21 or April 22.
This all depends on weather.
Depart at 07:00 HRS
I have picked the following route as I am very familiar with driving it so navigation should be a little bit easier.
- Depart Pincher Creek
- Travel north along the western slopes and intercept Highway #1 westbound
- Follow highway to Golden and land (I would have more then enough fuel to make it to Kelowna, but I figured full tanks and a quick break wouldn't hurt anybody)
- Depart Golden
- Follow Highway #1 through Rogers Pass, Revelstoke, Sicamous
- Head south at Sicamous and travel down through Vernon and then Kelowna
I plan on flying at about 8500ft ASL.
I will be filing a flight plan with Nav Canada.
I know it's the longer scenic route but I figure I am in no hurry and might as will make it as simple as possible.
Equipment On Board
- All maps, CFS
- Garmin 150XL GPS
- Ipad with Foreflight, GPS and Data Card
- Survival kit (Still have to add a sleeping bag and a couple other items)
- Snacks and water, piss jug as well just in case
I have a spot reserved for parking in Kelowna.
I think I have everything covered, but open to all suggestions.
I am not going to lie, I am a little nervous but as mentioned previously I do have a little bit of mountain time in helicopters. I figure if the weather is good and not in a rush it should work out quite well.
Again, thanks to everyone that has passed on knowledge previously.
Cheers

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
I don't want to throw a wrench into your plans, but I've always preferred going the south route. The terrain is lower, there are more diversionary airports, and usually the weather isn't as inclement. And by south I mean once you are in BC... I avoid the Crow's Nest Pass like the Plague.
YBW > Castle Junction > Radium Hot Springs > Cranbrook. From there you could either take the short cut up the St Mary's River to Grey Creek Pass, Crawford Bay, Nelson, and Castlegar.... or continue down to Creston and fly North up Kootenay lake.
From there your options are to fly south through Castlegar, Grand Forks, Midway, Rock Creek, and over the Anarchist to Osoyoos... or follow Hwy 33 north from Rock Creek to Kelowna; fly up the Arrow Lakes until you pick up Hwy 6 which takes you to Vernon; or simply avoid the higher peaks of the relatively low Monashee Range and just beetle bomb across the Okanagan Plateau..... shooting for north or south of the airport so you don't have to dive bomb coming over the last ridge.
Either way, have a safe and fun trip. Light winds, province-wide isobars, and no precip or low cloud and you should be fine.
Edit: Just realized Airtids said pretty much the same thing I did.

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
Great information.
I may have another plane coming with me now to tag along.
Just in the process of putting the above routes on Foreflight and it looks pretty good.
I have spent some time bombing around the crownest pass so I am not to worried to fly through the pass to Cranbrook.
Thanks
Jordy

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
If you can afford the flex to wait for a good VFR day it's a really nice way to spend a couple of hours in a plane and should ease your worries a bit. If you've had some experience already flying around crows nest you'll be fine, there are no ridge crossings or anything on either the north or south routes. Enjoy!

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
I must have been out of the country when you first posted this.
Someone else posted an offer of co pilot services but might have changed their mind as the post is deleted. Unless they private messaged you. I would go with you but I'm not flying enough these days to be way more valuable than moral support, and I'm not sure about being available. I could definitely meet you and offer a ride from a hotel for breakfast at YWB if you wanted to go on the Tuesday, the Calgary Flying Club there even has a small restaurant.
I have flown solo Abbotsford - YBW twice solo and YBW - Abbotsford once solo via the "northern VFR route" (following the transcanada number 1 highway). I am by no stretch of even my own over active imagination a proficient mountain pilot. I had a mountain check from my FTU prior to but in reality I waited out bad weather and relied heavily on Flight Service Specialists in Abbotsford and their local weather knowledge.
You will be fine flying this trip. I know because you are already wrote your intention to do it the way I flew it. 8500'asl wait for the weather to be very VFR. The Rodgers pass is one of the most amazing places I have flown. That is saying something considering I have flown around a few Hawaiian islands.
I must say the Crowsnest pass down the number 3 would not be my first choice because it can often be pretty windy in the opposite direction to your intention. No big deal, just turn back if you are not moving forward enough. Having said that as you know it's gorgeous scenery that way.
Springbank to Golden is the easiest part of the north route. The valleys are wide and slope slowly up to Field where the Continental divide is.
IMPORTANT BIT.
Don't fly on the day you put aside to do this trip if you are not comfortable going.
You can always come back later to get the plane when the weather improves.

Hey Pop n Fresh,
Lots still up in the air regarding the routes as there is a chance another person may fly along side in their own plane. If that's the case then I would be more comfortable taking another route.
If it works out that it's just me I will go with the original plan.
Getting excited, so hopefully we have blue skies and no wind on Monday / Tuesday

Sounds good, I'll try to keep an eye on this thread. Hope you have a great flight.
Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
If the winds are strong, be ready for the the three valley intersection just to the west of Revelstoke, it can get nasty with certain winds! Have fun, it'll be one of the more stunning flights you can do in this country!

Hey Jordy,
If I wasn't down in the US working right now, I'd take you up on your offer. What's already been said is lots of good advice. I would emphasize again not having a set date for this to happen and have flexibility with your schedual incase weather gets beyond YOUR comfortable limits.
Have a safe flight, you'll have some spectacular views on this trip. Goodluck out in Kelowna, tell Meg I say Hi!
Adios,
Dusty

Sir, You can't go in there!

CrackerJ99,
Well done in putting some proper thought into this. Too many people blast off without using their noggin.
Have a great trip!

The weather isn't looking to promising.
Might have to settle for some local flying.
I will have another opportunity in a week so hopefully the weather looks better.
Hey Dusty, will tell Megan you said Hi.
Cheers

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
Well, I finally thought to look up your departure. Feel silly for the wind lecture since home is pincher creek.
The mountains are a serious place but you must know much more about winds than I do.
Bummer about the forecast. It's been quite the snowy winter.

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
Sounds like you have some good ideas and lots of suggestions when it comes to routes.
My advice - let everyone know where you are. Postion Report - Position Report - Position Report. Even if no-one responds, your message will be recorded on 126.7. Don't do something silly like turn off your Mode-3C to save power (! trust me it happens). Beg, borrow, steal someone's SPOT and get someone to follow your breadcrumb online.
Finally - take a camera and post pictures on here when you get there!

Re: CZPC TO CYLW Help Required
Spot is a really good idea, so is texting someone your precise flight plan, departure point and time, ETE, ETA, and arrival point. Even if you file a Nav can plan. I do this on every flight, ESP. To remote areas.
