YWG October 30 Testing

Post by marvin34 »

I know there were about 50 Candidates that went through the testing in Winnipeg on Oct. 30. NavCanada will never tell you where you rank, but if we collaborate our dates of green lights/interview offers as a group we can get an idea of where we stand in the pool. If you don't want to post, just PM me. My choice is IFR stream.

Any idea on any upcoming courses for YWG? IFR or VFR?

During assessment they said training would be in spring. Didn't say IFR or VFR. Sounds like VFR/FSS final interviews are being done December and IFR in January.

Just got an invite for assessment at the end of Jan!
If you are offered a VFR course, at which point do they let you know which tower you'll be assigned to?

You generally won't find out which tower you're assigned to until close to the end of your basic VFR training.

For Winnipeg ACC, has anybody been through an IFR course lately and could tell us how long the unpaid part of training took before getting on the floor? Website says 7-14 months, just wondering what's realistic in Winnipeg.

Thanks

You can definitely plan on at least 10 months unpaid training, and then about 35K/yr on the floor for another 6-8 months or so before getting a half license, which then puts you into a much better pay bracket, then work on the job for several months before going back to the school for the other half of your license. Probably about a 2.5 - 3 year process to get a full license, realistically.

There are both IFR and VFR courses scheduled for the spring at YWG. They are running both high level and low level en route courses as well as a terminal course (which I think is all being filled internally). For VFR, they are very short staffed at YWG tower and I believe they have a need for others at one or two other facilities (Thunder Bay and Regina I believe - but don't quote me on that one).

What would be the chances that if you were scheduled for the January 29h in person assessment and passed that as well as the phone and in person interviews that you could be offered a spot in one of the spring courses? Or is it cutting everything too close and you would be in a pool for following courses?

I was offered a March 23rd 2015 VFR training seat in early January. So I guess that's a yes to the previously asked question.

I understand that there is an exam from the ITA self study coarse soon after training begins. I was told that the March 23rd coarse is starting a week earlier then usual to give students some extra time to study in class due to our abbreviated study time.

Question is this. How early into the training is that exam usually written.

I have no previous airplane anything experience, so this is all new to me. I'm excited and studying my ass off but it's alot to get my head around in 2 1/2 months.

PM me if I'm screwed...JK

My course wrote the ITA on the 4th day of the course.

2.5 months should be enough time to be prepared for the ITA. I had no previous aviation experience either, and about as much time as you to prepare, and didn't have any trouble with the exam. Just go over everything a few times. We had one day of that first week to cover some of the info, and ask any questions we had.
