[FSS] How many hours in a single work shift?

Post by praveen4143 »

Hey guys and gals of Nav Canada,

I've often wondered how I hear the exact same guy or gal up in the cab at our local FSS here almost all day. How long does a typical Flight Service Specialist work in one day? I know they take turns at the hot seat and switch out every so often. Is that once every 45 minutes or something like that?

Does it change if you are a Tower or ACC controller? If yes, what are their hours?

Just curious

In the ACC ATCs usually work 1 to 2 hours ON / 15mins to 1h OFF depending on staffing, traffic, etc.

Not quite sure about the FSS or the tower

Most FSS work the entire shift in the cab, 8+ hours; at some busier sites they will have 2 people on day shifts and rotate, otherwise they are there all shift.

What I meant is that I hear the same person at 9 am in the morning and at midnight! Of course they keep switching between two FSS people the whole day so I'm wondering if the shift is like 12 hours long?

Varies from station to station. Some stations have 8 hour days, some have 12, ours is 10.7.

In the case of hearing the same voice in the morning and than again at midnight, most likely catching them on their short change day. Day shift, than back for the night shift.

No first day of ATC school is how to sound the same as every other controller. Its actually scary how a like a lot of them sound. They all have the same voice. Im convinced its a course or something.

Lol! No I've personally met every single one of the Flight Service Specialists here over the course of many tours I've taken my students up to the cabin.. And I can differentiate every single voice

Now that I've read your user name Praveen 4143, I'm certain I know which site you are talking about. Without giving the site name away, they work 9.1 hr shifts. They generally start their rotation (daylight savings time anyhow), 9am to 6pm, 5am to 2pm and 10pm to 7am (aprx times). For the most part, its two 9am shifts, than two 5am shifts with a shortchange on the last one, off at 2pm and back at 10pm the same day. Usually always ending the rotation on an overnight shift. Or a combination of those shifts (two 9am's, one 5am and two 10pm's etc).

There is also an evening shift 1pm to 10pm, but that rotation is just a series evening shifts to get away from an extra shortchange back to days. There are other variables but that's pretty much it. There are also some 730 am floater shift starts.

To make it more confusing, over a 63 day period, it averages 4 on 3 off, with the last week 5 on 2 off. It looks different on paper though.

I do not envy their wildly varying routines! Even more respect to the guys and galsof the FSS here... They already do an awesome job without having to deal with such a messed up schedule! :prayer:

I'm pleasantly surprised someone recognised me.. Not that I was trying to be too covert or anything since my first name is right there! Lol.. I'm gonna guess you work at the same location! Lol...

Either way, thanks for the detailed explanation!

I'm glad to hear you're happy with the service we're providing Praveen. We do appreciate working with you and the company you work for. You're very knowledgeable and accomodating. Especially during this time of the year, as traffic gets more complex, considering most the province is on fire. Not to mention upcoming airport construction. Any other questions, concerns or complaints, just pop on up.

I asked this same question to my local FSS team a little while back. I may be wrong in some ways, but I know the night shift for the local radio is 2030 local to 0630 local. They do a change at 1230 and 1330 local also. They rotate on 3 radio positions and maybe one person checking the weather too. Overnights are two radios, the local and one RAAS. They used to work 6 on 3 off, and now it's 4 on 4 off 10.5 hrs. I visited for one hour on a Saturday morning, there were 4 FSS guys and 1 sup.

What was going on that the Supervisor was there on a Saturday?

Normally we have four people working during the day(plus supervisor); Two morning shifts and two afternoons. The first two are there before 7am and go home between 5 & 5:30ish pm. The afternoons start at 9:25 and 10:25, and leave at 8ish and 9ish pm respectively. The 4&4 is worlds better than the 6&3 was. :)
