IFR VFR FSS streams

#1 Post by niwre » Sun Dec 17, 2017 12:44 am

I'm curious about something, do people feel that they're potentially limiting themselves by refusing a different stream than the one they actually want? I see here that most people are lining up for IFR and VFR options yet wont even think about FSS as a means to get into the system then later on upgrading. I know of at least one FSS individual that got in with FSS then switched. How often does this happen? Is it practical for more individuals to try this or is this transition too difficult to make and this specialist is an exception? If people want to work for Nav Canada why limit yourself? Or does the risk of working in "the middle of nowhere" make it a drawback?

Although not impossible, it is a much harder transition from a FSS placement to a VFR or IFR one. I don't have the stats to hand, but I would say that it is generally the exception rather than a common norm.
The many FSS's I've spoken to have all said they love their role, and for many, the opportunity to work in a remote location is a positive they enjoy.

Ask yourself the question "would you be happy working any discipline, or is there only one that appeals?" If you feel you'd be happy anywhere, then say that at the interview when it arises. If you can only see yourself in on particular stream, be honest. In my circumstance I was only really interested in the VFR training, but I would have accepted IFR or FSS if that was all that was offered. And that is what I told my interviewers. I was placed in the IFR pool and started training VFR a few months later.
