IFR course question

#1 Post by tam204 » Wed Feb 01, 2017 8:50 am

Hey guys, just a quick question here. I'm currently streamed IFR and I received an email from Nav canada about up coming course dates (no offer just an update).
The email stated

"The Generic Enroute (IFR) course starts in the middle of April and the Generic Terminal (IFR) course starts in the middle of May."

I'm a little confused about the last one, is there such a thing as generic terminal IFR or did they perhaps mean that is the VFR course?

Sorry if it's a but of a dud questions. It was my understanding that terminal positions were all tower VFR positions. Thanks.

Generic Enroute would be positions that are mainly Centre Controllers, Like North Low ect. Generic Terminal would be the Arrival and Departure Controllers ie YYC Departure and so on.

May I ask what FIR you are streamed in?

So generic terminal is in fact the VFR course then? Perfect, thanks for clearing that up!

I'm streamed YWG

No, Generic Terminal is an IFR course.

I'm not YWG, but generic terminal will be for Winnipeg terminal and any other similar specialties. The previous mention of arrivals and departures means just outside the control zone. The general idea is that a terminal specialty uses different skills and procedures/standards than an enroute course so no need to spend a time teaching things that won't be used.
