Hello!
Question for those people working YVR approach. While flying the Canuck STAR arriving from the east after passing MILLS, we're often given a clearance such as, descend 5k unrestricted, cancelling out the altitude restrictions down route. My question to you is: when you issue this clearance, are you implicitly asking that we expedite our descent, or is it just giving us the option to if we so choose?
Any answers are much appreciated

Re: Question for YVR approach controllers
An unrestricted descent just means you are waived from meeting the altitude restrictions on the STAR (in this case at BASRA and SEBOG). If the instruction is just “descend 5000”, you are expected to meet the altitude restrictions at BASRA (>10000’) and SEBOG (>8000’), and only go down to 5000’ once you are west of SEBOG.
If you are needed to expedite, you’ll hear expedite.
