Scheduling of double midnights

Post by tesox2 »

Hello all/

One of the sectors here is getting double midnights almost every round. Anyone else across the country?

I would really appreciate people giving me a PM with their ACC information about what sectors are getting scheduled double midnights, if any at all....and if none, that information would be great.

This information will be kept confidential in terms of source provided, but will be used as an argument in providing evidence to have it stopped.

Thank you.,

Thats a similar shift rotation to what we work ours in YYQ is EEE, DDD, MMM. then 3 off then back at it again. The short changes are pretty tough, especially if your me and you've been at them for 3 years but it esentially gives us an extra day off since you get off at 8am on your last day of work.

We had just had someone scheduled FIVE Mids in a row. 0532-1400 then 0000-0832 2200-0628x4 All straight time.

Next cycle I have 3.

Likewise. Singles are the rare exception.

In YYZ ACC we only have blocks of mids , 5 or 6, and complain when we get less then a full cycle of mids.

To each their own I guess.

How many midnight shifts would you get on average in YYZ? Would it be something like 1 in 8?

YTH is 6 in a row, once every 45 days.

no sig because apparently quoting people in context is offensive to them.

Depends on the size of the specialty you're in. We get then about once every 56 day period where others get them every second or third 56 day period.

We've had a few people scheduled double mids here, doesn't happen all that often... and even less often do double midnights actually get worked, hasn't happened to me yet though.

WTF... why?

What's your staffing compliment on a midnight shift? for what reason would any sector in this country need to schedule people for 5 mids in a row? You would think if they were short staffed they'd need people during the busy periods, not on the midnights.

That's terrible! Especially if that kind of scheduling is happening in Dec/Jan, it must be a riot in the summertime there...

The "Norm" for us is 5 or 6 in a 56 day period

Our "Normal" rotation is:

Our midnight range is from 8 to 11 in a 56 day cycle. We are staffing 3 on the midnight when 2 is the requirement.

I am complaining, it is really having an affect on my family, which is more important than anything else.

The main argument is one of safety. If we are working double the national average of midnights, then there is definately something wrong...this is what we are trying to figure out. It is proven over and over the degridation in mental capacity after those kinds of disruptions to sleep...we all signed up for shift work, thats not the problem...but when everyone here at this sector is starting to feel the affects of the midnights, than its time to do something. Arent we all in the same boat?

Staffing 3 on a mid when the requirement is 2??? Get the local on it and go down to 2. Why are they running plus 1 on the mid?? I have never seen the mid run at plus 1 anywhere, they won't even let us go one over on the mid shift here. Don't know what region you're in but talk to your VP and get on this, it shouldn't be this way.

We often run 1 over on the midnights (mins are 2) and occasionally they run 2 over (I've never had the pleasure). Having said that I only get scheduled 1 midnight per round, at the end. In my speciality, scheduled double mids are very rare. Midnights with 1 and 2 over are very popular with controllers here. Means 1 and possibly 2 more bods to split the night with. Makes the mids way more palatable.

I like this question better. The answer for me, without taking leave to avoid them, is 6.
