YYZ is terrible on weekends!

Post by Inverted2 »

What is wrong with this place? They have all those runways and are only using 1 for arrivals and 1 for departures on weekends. Getting flow times in perfect weather and 25 mile downwinds. Is it because they are too cheap to properly staff? I wonder how many tons of fuel get wasted on a weekend. Also nice to land on 05 or 23 to taxi 2 miles to park at the transborder gates. Hope the airlines are getting a discount on their landing fees because of this lousy service!

This is a little off topic but I'm gonna add my YYZ rant. The atis really, migratory geese (or goose depending on who's working) affecting all runways 24/7/365. If they were migratory wouldn't they at least only affect the south runways in January and February. I fly into YYZ on a regular basis and very rarely see geese there. The problem with this of course is that on the day there is geese (or goose) pilots will not be looking for them because its on every atis. I thought the atis was issued by atc to provide pilots with arrival and departure info and not a C.Y.A. by the GTAA or NAV Canada lawyers.

Nice generalized ranting. :roll:

<insert tongue in cheek>

Pilots at YYZ are terrible!

Generalized? Of course. That's what makes it a stupid statement.

[counter rant]

There is a lot less demand on Saturday afternoon (not Sundays though) so staffing is reduced.
Does your airline do 6 flights a day to Hartford every day or just weekdays? Not enough passengers at weekends? Funny that.

Can you honestly say you've never departed from 24R when issued 23 by clearance? You've never departed 33R from B1 when issued 05 by clearance?

Sometimes despite flow control measures, even in good weather, 15-20 arrivals arrive in a bunch, so to avoid a 25 mile final you were offloaded onto the departure runway and had to taxy a long way? Which would you prefer?
If they were migratory wouldn't they at least only affect the south runways in January and February.
:?

Not everybody flies in and out every day so the information needs to be there for the occasional visitor too.

High Intensity Runway Operations are advertised too but compliance with those is variable at best and downright awful sometimes. If you're issued a take off clearance and you are not in a position to roll straight away, you are delaying yourself and everyone behind you.

Yesterday evening, Sunday, was a brutal shift for all in YYZ ATC . Thunderstorms all over the place, wind shifts, runway changes, weather avoidance, lightning advisories, airport construction closures. But I forgot, its quiet at weekends. :roll:

Try to think of the bigger picture once in a while.

<remove tongue from cheek>

Props to Toronto west high, south low and arrival for handling the difficult weather yesterday.

We were inbound from the west and cleared to hold up high at YWT. Unfortunately YWT was sandwiched between two monster cells (hail and tornados) and our turn radius was quite large at FL300+ so we had to tell ATC we were unable. I could tell they were scrambling, but they quickly and efficiently rerouted us to the south over LINNG. There must be tons of coordination going on behind the scenes and it's always nice to have ATC on your side when you're trying to stay clear of CBs.

They have all those runways and are only using 1 for arrivals and 1 for departures on weekends
Except during the departure rush on both Sat and Sun mornings, and the arrivals on Sunday afternoons and evenings, and the arrival rush on Saturday afternoon where the tower will accept offloads on the departure runway....or departures on Sat evening etc etc.

The optics from the pilot perspective are different from the controller one especially over a 24 hour period. We don't land one/depart one all day at the weekends. There are the usual peaks and troughs that there are during the week......the difference is the troughs are more prominent...so you don't need all runways for an hourly movement rate of 20 aircraft. If you want to tell NAV Canada and the GTAA to staff for a full operation for 10am on a Saturday/Sunday morning then feel free....you will get the expected response.

BTW as always you can ASK for a preferential runway....the tower/terminal controller has the discression...if we know in advance. For example if we are Landing 24R Departing 23...how many times do you think Fedex gets given the right side? Ditto UPS, or anyone parking at the Northend.
If you want the shorter taxi..ask the controller....the worst that can happen is we say no...the best that happens is you get your choice...and then the title of this thread changes instantaneously.
