S61 keeps on going

#1 Post by SeptRepair » Fri Dec 03, 2010 11:17 am

http://www.verticalmag.com/control/news ... =15533&z=4. The energizer bunny of helicopters. There is also a stretch version being engineered currently that will be even better.

And what a wonderful machine it is.

Of the heavies, it's the one I'd like to fly the most. But, with the death of logging out here, that seems pretty unlikely.

Great machines in the right hands.

Agreed STL, Heli logging is pretty much left to the S64 and Vertols. I cant honestly say if there are any 61's currently logging in BC. Most likely due to being cost prohibitive with the continual AWDs coming out due to RHL operations and other maintenance issues that accumulate with the heavy lift aspect of flying. Their main roles seem to be offshore oil and firefighting. However, many are in Afghanistan moving troops and supplies so they have found their niche there as well. Either way it goes to prove with the proper maintenance and TLC an aircraft can continue to be useful for many years past its prime.

Cool pic, I have many a friend rotating out of there right now. The money sure makes a guy think about throwing his hat in the ring.

Having spent a fair amount of time in Afghanistan now, seeing all the different civil contractors and their operations, not to mention the military side.... not so much. It's not worth it, no matter what the money. They aren't throwing that kind of cash at the job because we're nice people. Guys will get away with it for so long, and leave with a bunch of cash, but there have been a number of civi a/c shot down already, and it's just a matter of time until more are. The theatre is getting more violent, not less, and a great many machines take fire even in "green" areas, just ask the US Army how many machines they've lost at "green" FOB's... They won't publish that particular stat though.

It's always pissed me off to hear about Canada's "Aging Sea Kings" when I know full well, in civi hands and in all levels of American millitary, they seem to serve on and on. Purely politics in Canada, I'm certain.

I once met a fellow who worked in one of the major stores depots for the Canadian Armed Forces.

He told me that the bulk of the time that they claim Sea Kings are 'unserviceable / grounded', they are just waiting for parts; serviceable parts that they have in inventory but they aren't anywhere near where they are needed.

Furthermore, they have to be shipped to several stations to get 'inspected' and 'inventoried' before they can go to where they're required.

It's just needless layers of beurocracy making the '61 unviable in the CAF.

210k for one years work on a one in one out rotation, made me turn my head. I wont be doing it. I have talked to engineers currently there and one had a RPG land right in the area they where playing basketball ( i think thats what it was). Thing didnt explode. That would have made me shit and high tail it home. Talked to a 61 driver a couple weeks back and he has been shot at 3 times with bullet holes in the fuselage to prove it. He keeps that shit from his wife and family as to not give them any excuse to harass his ass to come home. Talking to them, and people like yourself, there is no question its a matter of time before there are going to be civilian operators shot down with a loss of life.

Yes,

Like just about everything related to the Afghan war, the most relevant information is keep out of public view. In the words of one American Col. I talked to a while back, "If it flies in Afghanistan, it's going get shot at. Period."

There are almost nightly rocket attacks at most of the major bases, Kandahar in particular, and almost all the smaller FOBs are attacked on a regular basis, some daily, just depends on location of course. The KAF rocket attacks are quite an odd thing, as 90% of them come from a mountain 3km to the east that is bristling with surveillance. So much so that launches are detected immediately and alarms sound on the base - which is huge. You're supposed to grab your body armour and head to one of the concrete shelters that are literally everywhere, but almost nobody does. Every structure and tent is surrounded by concrete blast walls, and on a 16sq mile base, if the rocket hits your tent or building, well, I guess most are willing to take that chance. There are injuries and the odd death from these, but the vast majority fall harmlessly, but there's no mistake you're in a war zone, even in the cities that are KAF or Bagram.

Of course attacks at the small FOBs are much bigger deal. No, I'm pretty happy earning significantly less to not be flying unescorted, slow, loud, civi machinery. Skylink had an Mi-26 shot down slinging into a "safe" FOB last year, lost 6 men.

The ex-Canuck compound. Our guys/gals just moved out this year into better accom. Now guests and contractors get put here for the most part.

Nope. But everyone involved is a contractor running themselves - as I do - through Ltd. company, so there are less taxes than you would pay as an individual. Also tells you something about the conditions, requiring contractors and not full-time employees.

No top bunks, just box springs to lie on, thankfully our troops have much better set-ups now:

The 61 was always my favorite to fly on as a PAX adult sized comfortable that would float on the water.Short rides the Bolkow was fun.The Chinook had some scarry vibrations that made snoozing almost impossible. The Pumas and Tigers let everyone share the beer farts if you do not like small spaces the puma will do your head in.
One of the pilots told us that the PUMA had some serious system redundacies. When one system fails the other kicks in to keep it going. It did not have the same stable ride that the 61 has and got the nickname of aerospastic.
Do they have any Jolly greens flying .I met one of the jolly green guys who used to do the pilot rescues in Nam and he could tell a good tale of facing machine gun nests in the tree tops while attempting to rescue downed aircrew.
An old friend had a big whole put in his shirt sleeping on his back on a top bunk in WW2,if he had been sleeping on his side he would not be have been telling that tale to his grandchidren.
Did you ever hear the story of the fire alarm/smoke detector on one of the 61s flying in the North sea field when the pilot looked back some hippy was cooking beans on a primus stove. It must be true as i heard on the RGIT Helicopter Underwater escape course

Find it kind of funny they are lengthening the 61 airframes now. For a long time, all they could talk about was shortening them. Wonder if that makes them original spec again ;)

I miss CFIBN up here in CYFB, it was good to me, but the B214 they replaced it with just sounds so damned sweet that it's hard to be mad about it at all.
