The CBR (California Bearing Ratio) can be quite high for grass/sod.

While in Korea we tried to hammer in a few stakes to anchor our "stuff" and with hydraulic hammers, they wouldn't go more than a foot into the ground (5' long stakes). Other places it's like cutting through butter with a hot knife.

I imagine that field is similar to the Korean soil, with a high CBR.

Very interesting, Nark, I'd never heard of the CBR before.

CBR is the yardstick foir companies like Bombardier/Dehav. For the Dash8-100, a value of 20 is required for ops on un-paved surfaces.

Pictures can be seen in the "terminal" building at the airport.

On September 21st, 1972, Hope Regional Airpark was host to an amazing event! A Boeing 737 landed and took off several times on our 4,600-foot grass runway.

Hope Airpark was chosen by the Boeing Corporation as the perfect laboratory to test the 737's performance on a grass field.

The plane was fitted with special low-pressure tires, and the runway was wetted by tanker trucks to test performance on wet grass.

Resulting tire ruts left by the 90,000-pound aircraft were measured and recorded by Boeing engineers.

The Boeing pilot was Lew Wallick Jr.

The Hope 737 event is a bit of trivia that I have never heard about. Thanks for posting that as it was quite interesting.
