McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom available for airshows . . .
Collins Foundation has their privately owned McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom available for the 2011 airshow season - Click Here. Heh book early . . . dates going fast!!! Back in the day Canada almost ordered F-4's but we couldn't afford them and got Canadian made F-5's instead. This is a photo of actual aircraft available. Based in Texas.

My understanding was that the UK wanted us to produce f-4m's for them in exchange we would get 200 of them for free. LB Pearson's ministers felt that it would be to complex for us to produce and instead built F5's in YUL. Problem is the F5 also had production issues, building an F5 with one piece wingskins requiring new production processes wouldn't have been any harder than building the F5's.

As always, the politicians do this.....The F5/T-38 was a simple airplane compared to the Phantom.rigpiggy wrote:My understanding was that the UK wanted us to produce f-4m's for them in exchange we would get 200 of them for free. wasn't the first time they were screwin up... Always remember that fu...ing John D. scraped the Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow, which could have flown up to mach 3.5, first fly-by-wire A/C... even the engines were canadian. All those engineers moved to with Boeing, NASA and others after Black Friday the 29 of 1959.
The Best safety device in any aircarft is a well-paid crew.

not really the structures work would have been comparable, only the avionics/weapons system that would have been sourced by US mfr's

My friend used to work for Avtel and was in charge of this F-4D and a 2nd one they had. They were actually owned by USAF but they had them for a USN target towing contract.
This actual aircraft is now on a pedestal at Mojave - it was based at Hangar 210 - the big B747 hangar at Avtel. The engines were time expired and USAF wouldn't replace them.
Avtel had been offered a F-18 to replace the F-4D but my friend refused an kept this F-4D flying, he cannibalized N402AV to keep N401AV in the air for as long as he could.

hope to see it fly again as the phantom along with the voodoo we're alway's excellent to watch at airshow's in the 80's/90's . both were loud & very smokey ! the german phantom once departed old 6L at yyz and turned towards the AC mtce hangar at about 300'agl to buzz the ramp area before climbing out , what a moment !

Here's a shot of the F-4 at last year's Oshkosh.
It's so nice to be able to get up close and personal with all the great airplanes there. And got to see it fly around a few times in the daily airshow. Very nice!!

Being stupid around airplanes is a capital offence and nature is a hanging judge!

That looks fast.
Why is the the nose of the plain painted black?
Its just the design or is there something else?

My guess is to prevent glare off the nose.
