Hourly cost for a 8KCAB and Pitts S1

Post by Raf »

Hello,

Coming back to the aerobatic, I am looking for information for the Citabria 8KCAB and the Pitts S1. Also, as owner, what is the hourly cost for these planes and the provision for engine, prop etc...

Thanks,

Raf

Well I can't talk about the Decathlon but the S-1T (Certified, 200HP, constant speed) goes something like this.

Engine - my first one lasted 600hrs. So divide overhaul costs of 30K by 600hrs for your realistic engine cost/hr dry.
Prop - prop/governer were a bit better, about 700hrs at a cost of about 15K.
Fabric/paint/wings etc. also about 700hrs before rebuilt/refabric etc. required. So thats a cost of about 50K.
Fuel. We are about 2.00 a litre and its about 10gph x country, and 17gph acro so average it to 13gph.

So thats:
Engine = $50/hr
Prop = $21/hr
Fabric = $71/hr
Fuel = $104/hr

All up then we are at about $250/hr wet - not including fixed costs.

Fixed costs run typically:

Hangar $5000/yr
Insurance $2500/yr
Annual $3000/yr (but can be much more every few years).

So there you go fixed costs of about $10,000/year and about $250/hr wet.

Of course if you go uncertified its probably 1/2 that cost.

Its not cheap ;( but those are the real numbers infact if I include more items like radios, avionics etc. its even more.

Peter is very left-brain. I look at aircraft ownership costs in
a simplistic, holistic way: it will absorb all the money you have,
and ask for more.

In many ways, aircraft ownership is not really all that different
from a nasty drug habit, or being married to a high-maintenance
trophy wife, like a liquid-cooled WWII warbird.

True, I was in a grumpy mood when I wrote that... I forgot to add the tag line:

Having a personal red rocket that goes zero to 160 on the quarter mile and then straight up.. and the legal right to do that at a number of airports... priceless!
