Well, had a conversation over the weekend where I heard "Next time we go to Oshkosh we should go earlier so we get to experience the whole thing. I think we missed out not being there for the first weekend"

If you're going to bother to go to OSH, arrive a couplewe missed out not being there for the first weekend
days early. Sit at the north 40 and watch the arrivals
on 27. Bring a scanner if you want. Better to bring
large boards with single digit integers on them so you
can score landings
Seriously, the north 40 arrivals put on the best airshow
of the whole week. You will be amazed at what you
see. Bring a camera. Oh, and some sunblock and a
hat!
When you get bored, limp over (on your sore feet) to
Friar Tuck's for a beer. Or two. And look at all the
sunburned, smiling people!
If at all possible, for the full experience, fly in VFR.
Do the fisk/ripon arrival. No side-by-side, no under
and over. A high wing is best. Bring a blue tarp,
stretch it out over a wing and put your tent under
that. The tarp keeps the water off, the tent keeps
the mosquitos out.
PS My first time at OSH was 1990. Been back a
few times since then. Mostly I try to avoid it because
I get stuck flying the twin, trying to organize a
collection of drunks through the border both ways.

Just saw that Patty Wagstaff is going to be back. And flying a Tucano. Should be a hoot.
Maybe I'll luck out and bump into her for a beer or something. Just as long as we don't go driving after.

Last time I ran across Patty (in February), she
was flying a Bonanza.
was flying a Bonanza.
Re: EAA AirVenture Oshkosh July 29 - Aug 4, 2013
She likely wasn't doing aerobatics in the Bonanza.
airventure.org wrote:This year at Oshkosh, Wagstaff will be flying the Embraer Mk. 2 Tucano, a light-attack and training aircraft. This former Royal Air Force trainer turboprop will fly a full aerobatic routine, believed to the first solo routine flown at a North American public air show.

I went to my "business" e-mail today and opened all the EAA messages. Got a little remorseful about not going this year.
Better distract myself.

I'll be there..... not flying in, dragging the tent trailer to Scholler from North Bay. Dad and I plan on staying all week.... can't wait!!
Re: EAA AirVenture Oshkosh July 29 - Aug 4, 2013
Not a big deal, but for anyone that is going that isn't an EAA member, here's some news.
There's also an International night that's put on mid-week. Good food and a beer truck and lots of interesting folks to talk to - how can you go wrong? Details at the International tent.EAA E-news wrote:June 6, 2013 - AirVenture 2013 welcomes the addition of the Canadian Activities Area, adjacent to the International Visitors Tent, offering resources for those visitors traveling from Canada to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. It will also serve as a place where non-Canadian members can learn more about what happens in the EAA world north of the border.
Several forums and presentations will be held here throughout the week, beginning with Monday's session highlighting AirVenture activities specific to Canadian EAA members. Presenters will provides information about all aspects of flight, from light-sport aircraft versus Canadian ultralights to information on flying Young Eagles in Canada and much more. Several Canadian members' aircraft will also be on display throughout the week.
It's not all business, though. The EAA Canadian Council, which will be headquartered in the Canadian tent along with C-PLAN Insurance Plan representatives, hosts an ice cream social for Canadian EAA members on Wednesday, July 31, from 4-6 p.m. Come stop by and say hello (or bonjour), meet some new people, and enjoy a cool treat!

Beefitarian weirdo talk.
I was reluctant to join EAA because I have been hoping to get involved with one of the many clubs.
People, these days are less fun to hang out with because everyone likes fighting instead. Look around here.
In my opinion the EAA is still fun. Join, it's cheaper than me and the benefits are excellent. I'm happy I had to join to camp there. 50 bucks awesome. My wife and kids all get their own cards. You can even get into a bunch of unrelated museums. http://www.astc.org/passport/

I've been personally happy with EAA and have been contemplating a lifetime membership. At first I thought it was only for builders, but I'll second Beef's assessment that its just plain fun. Also, the subsription you get to Sport Aviation is worth it if only to read Mike Busch's column.
Them's fightin' words!
BTW: Did you send in all your entry cards for the Stearman? Most awesome prize ever!

One problem
As far as I know the aircraft raffles has never been won by someone outside the US
most likely because the vast majority of tickets are purchased by US citizens

I won a pair of ski bindings once, and $40 or so on 649. Hit 4 numbers. I thought the prize would be more but the way they divide it, no.
If I buy tickets for anything. I consider it a donation to whatever is holding the draw. I bought some tickets last year at AirVenture.
By the way, last night I dreamt about going this year, woke up, went back to sleep and continued to dream about it.

Re: EAA AirVenture Oshkosh July 29 - Aug 4, 2013
I'm jonesing to go again this year, but just haven't quite wrapped my head around it. Flying in the cherokee and camping with the spam cans doesn't appeal to me after spending last year on the flightline in the Cub.
I keep mentioning it to family to see if anyone really wants to go, if I found someone who was really excited to go, or another pilot looking for some company, I'd find a way to scrape together the cash (and hall pass from the wife) and go.

I'm bored and thinking or starting the 2014 & 2015 Oshkosh threads.
Since it's summer and that means I work 24/7 I can't even get a part time paying gig for entertainment.
Dance monkeys dance!
Edit: too bad you're not in YYC Lotro. I could ferry one of those there with a kid or two and you could pick the one you liked to fly better. You could camp at flight line with the cubs and still bring the six full load. Problem solved.
