You guys have it all wrong. The pilot was simply too short, or too stupid to use a little more right rudder.

There was a very long takeoff run available. He just couldn't keep it straight.

What has using right rudder got to do with stalling a plane off the water? I've seen low timers do this in the past. In their panick they are trying to yank the plane off the water. "The harder I pull back, the faster I'll get airborn"

Lost in Saigon, your photo lends credence to the idea that he may have been posing for the camera. He certainly had lots of room.

That looks like an amazing seaplane base.

If he was able to keep it straight and use all the available take off distance, he would not have had to panic and yank it off.

Wow.. well its not a CVR...but it is an ATC tape. The C185 pilot even warned him to push right or else... He was a low time guy, little experience, and was "rushed" on take off...he likely fixated on the point and that was that. What a waste of a beautiful DHC2.

They even gave him the winds..TWICE.

Whoever said it above about it being an awesome base.. I agree!

Im glad no one got hurt. Just a bruised doctors ego.

Fly safe all.

PS.. GREAT pic Lost in Saigon thx!
