How do pilots in the forest fire bombing industry determine how much time you can spend on a fire and when it's time to refuel?
The 415 has a "bingo" fuel adjustment on the fuel gauges. Once set the fuel tank indicators changes colour from blue to yellow when bingo is reached drawing your attention & telling you it's time to leave.
The setting of "Bingo" fuel is on the water bombing check list.
One of the questions Ontario AAO's ask on larger fires is how long each tanker has on station.
Lots of our dispatches involve multiple fires. The GPS has made the task of fuel management much easier then it was in the past.
415's in Ontario are fueled for on average a 4 hour missions.

On the 215 we use math: Time to get back from fire + reserve converts to lbs of fuel. When the gauges drop to that point, back we go...
