Gravel Strip Training

Hi all,

Looking for any tips/advice on training for landing on gravel. My only experience is from my PPL, doing touch & goes on a gravel road not far from the airport, but that was a quite awhile ago. I have picked out a local aerodrome that has a quassi gravel strip, it's got a bit of pee-size gravel but mostly grass that's grown through. I'd like to take some renters/students there and just wondering if there is anything specific or new to watch out for.

Cheers,

TD

Yeah do the minimum of starting/stopping. If you are stationary and trying to get moving the rocks are more likely to hit the plane/prop. Creeping along too slowly is also bad for the same reason.

demonstrate a rolling run up if possible. Either way make sure they understand that its a bad idea to do a static runup on gravel.

+2 rolling runup, I also like to cut the engine while rolling to prevent getting stuff in the prop.

Keep the stick back too, helps prevent dings
