Red Bull Air Race guide- it's coming to Windsor 2010!

Post by . ._ »

Hey folks!

Have you heard the news? It's official. It'll be PARTY TIME IN WINDSOR June 5-6, 2010!

I went last year and it was GREAT! I'll definitely be back this year.

Now here's the ISTP guide to the WINDSOR RED BULL AIR RACES!

1. Book your hotel rooms NOW! They'll fill up quickly downtown, if they're not full already. The race is at the foot of Ouellette Avenue. You can always cancel your reservation if you can't make it that weekend. Play it safe.

Hotels in Windsor

2. The race can be seen from various places by the river, but they are a bit far away from the action, so I recommend buying your tickets in advance and save a few bucks. I had the cheap tickets last year and that was fine. Watching the real-time jumbotron by the beer tent is really cool, and everyone is pumped up by the groovy techno/rock they play during the race. SMOKE ON!!!

3. Last year they closed off the streets downtown to car traffic, and most of the bars' patios were extended out into the streets, and there was music everywhere. It was a massive PARTY! The feel was electric.

4. In my opinion, the best breakfast downtown is at Biscuits and Gravy Southern Bistro. With the best biscuits and gravy I've ever tasted in Canada.

Biscuits and Gravy

The best dinner for a reasonable price is at the Terra Cotta Pizzeria right next door. They have the best wood-fired pizza in North America, in my opinion. Unfortunately they don't deliver. If you order pizza for delivery, you're in luck. Just order from any pizza place you don't recognize. NO CHAIN PIZZA, PLEASE- it is the worst in Windsor. I'm partial to Pizza King, Franco's is a standard (but a little greasy) and Naples is good too, but really, you can't go wrong ordering pizza from anywhere.

Terra Cotta Pizzeria

Need a shawarma? Any one on Ouellette Avenue is good.

5. Need a nice Cuban Cigar? They're sold everywhere downtown, but the odd time, you'll get a stale fake. The best place to buy a cigar is at La Casa Del Habano

6. Wanna lose some money in a hurry? Yes there is a Casino there. It's a sponsor of the event. The best place to drink in the Casino is at the VU bar. It is EXTREMELY hard to find in the Casino (they want you to gamble, not drink), so you will have to ask a security guard or two to find it.

7. I have heard if you fly into the event with your own plane, airplane parking will be better this year than last year. Other than that, I don't know much about what's happening at the airport. Contact them well in advance.

That's my quick guide for this year's AWESOME races. Hope to see you there!

I agree, all those tips sound great. I had a blast last summer, but maybe i'll go a little easier on the redbull this time around. But how can you go wrong when red vodka, or jager bombs are the $2 drink special EVERYWHERE.. My heart was going for 3 days.

Any restaurant with gravy in the name sounds like a winner :prayer:

If I'm not mistaken, there are dudes stripping at Jason's now, but there are a couple other strip joints downtown.

That's why I'm here. :)

If anyone has any other Windsor questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them. I've spent a good deal of time there, so I know the low-down. (or at least I'd like to think so.)

I was fortunate enough to sit in the "High Flyers Lounge" for the entire weekend which in addition to the best seats in the house and the most comfortable seats it included some amazing food and of course all the Red Bull and Grey Goose Vodka you could drink. It also had a meet and greet with the pilots and in the case of a couple of pilots that were not able to compete that weekend, this is where the would hang out. I watched the events on Sunday with the 2 owners of MX Aircraft to my left at our table and the family of Mike Goulian at my right. They also dont seem to think that High Flyers Lounge guests should have to walk anywhere so they had golf carts taking us all over their territory. What a weekend!!

I highly recommend going to the races to anyone who has not been. It is spectacular!! I can only hope I get free High Flyers tickets again.
