EASA PPL based on Canadian CPL (?)

Post by Bones »

Hello all,

I know I should just look it up but I find the euro regs a little confusing and I'm packing for a trip right now so, while I'm thinking of it hopefully someone simply knows the answer:

Does anyone know if there's a process to obtaining a PPL based on a Canadian CPL to fly in Europe similar to the agreement we have with the US? All I had to do to get an FAA PPL was fill out a form and I had a license in my hands within a couple weeks. I've got a few trips to Europe coming up this summer and there's an opportunity to fly some cool stuff that I'd like to take advantage of while there.

Thanks in advance for both the helpful and snotty answers, they're all entertaining. 8)

Cheers!

You might find it easier to simply go for a validation of your Canadian license. Usually this will be based on the country and restricted for aircraft registered in that country. But no, being Europe, generally speaking nothing is easy, straight forward, or free (or permanent) unlike something you get from the FAA.

For what it's worth if you are doing a short-term visit of Europe, it might just be easier to have a local instructor or pilot sit in with you while you fly. Besides resolving the bureaucratic headache, sometimes this takes the stress out of dealing with local procedure and language issues and also he can act as a guide!

Pick a european country. Get a medical. Then take written exams in:

air law
human factors
RT

then pass a full ppl flight test.

Thanks for the replies.

It's a single seat airplane so the instructor thing wouldn't really work out too well in this case ;)

Per Annex III of Commission Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011 (no, I'm not kidding) you can get a once-only 1 year licence validation, on the basis of any ICAO licence.

See page 169 of this document: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/ ... 78&from=EN
