It's a lot of short flights and a lot of sitting around in places like Edmonton and Grande Prairie. Alberta Health wants the crews to stay at the airport in case another call comes in while they're waiting, which means it's almost impossible to go out for a meal too. It's long days away from home, but most of that time isn't actually spent in the air. By CARs max, I'm referring to duty days, not flight hours.

It sounds like the reserve life was just not for you. It sounds like it's a normal reserve job as any city, it is what you make of it.

You can sit at home waiting for a call, or you can continue on with your life with your flight bag in your trunk.

Spinner200, I don't think someone's experience at NAC being different than you or your peers has anything to do with their flying abilities, being flushed out, or having a chip on their shoulders. It sounds like they were promised something that wasn't delivered, and are informing every one who may be looking at NAC as a potential employer to be aware of their experience. Very much like how you are informing everyone of your experience. Obviously information from a former employer can be out dated but should never be discounted.

Based on what you guys are saying though it sounds like your typical charter outfit. No real schedule, a lot of sitting around and reserve, and anywhere from 300 hours onwards per year. You look at Sunwest, NCA, Airco, and the likes they deal with more or less the same type of variables with their king air flying.

You guys have demonstrated both sides of the coin. If you are ok with 300 hours/yr and reserve life in ype, consider NAC. If you're not, look elsewhere. YPE isn't the only place hiring first officers for their first turbine job.

I got offered a job there by the CP in or around 04/05, BE20 FO. So drove the truck up to Peace River only to meet the owner who started interviewing me, he looked at my current PA31 card and told me I'd have to work the ramp and maybe I'd get to fly the Navajo occasionally for a year or so before I got in the King Air... I got back in my truck. CP at the time was a bit dumbfounded... Sorry he said. Owner's a dick.

Ownership has changed since then. The medevac contract is slated to switch hands to a new carrier but there are attempts to halt that. Uncertainty until that gets resolved.

Friend of mine txtd me last month saying She is liking new job. The original founding owners sold company in 2015, Current owners have in place very good mgt team. personable company She said,They run it well. They value family and do there best to accommodate. Pay is top 10 percent of the 703 industry standard 85k capt medevac. Upon AHS approval First year 7days on 7days off. Work is 1week of nights then off week of days. After training you can live cype or grimshaw. Or commute on your own dime. 72k first year 11on 3 off. If you prefer to fly a lot more yyc based and fly sched /charter.

Maintenance staff is very good and snags are rectified quickly.

The medivac contract who got it and who didn't etc is a sore point for all operators. Canwest was awarded the contract without due process to verify it could meet the requirements (ie hangars ) some over reach was done in assuming the other operators would laydown and fold tents. Not so. So the saga continues. She said F0's tend to want to go sched. To get the time quickly.. She said " would give them a 8.5 to 9 out a 10 as 703 company. The pay for the sched could be better but the yyc charter market is Very competitive. Take care 8)

Can anyone comment on the working conditions for the mechanics? I see that they’re advertising for AME positions
“Northern Air is looking to add to our current team an additional two (2) AME's interested in filling positions in Peace River (1) and Calgary (1). The shift is 8 days on 6 days off working a 10 hour day. Overtime available.”

What do the shifts look like? They’re 10 hour 8 days on 6 off but anyone know what time of day, and if it’s consistent or swings (switching between mornings/evenings/nights)? What the expectations are regarding overtime? Days off and being on-call? Staying later during ones shift than stated schedule? If there’s a limit on how far away from the airport one is expected to be - I guess this would tie into the on-call expectations -for example if one lives 30 minutes away would that cause difficulties?

I’m glad to hear the company is a better place to work for than before.

As far as the company goes its not officially called NAC anymore although their hangar still has that sign. Officially it's just Northern Air. Rob is gone, the Pa31's, and Beech 100's are gone, so virtually all of the last 2 pages of info doesn't apply as far as promises made and not kept. There are 5 200's, and one 1900D.

Bases are YYC and YPE. Captains and engineers have the option to live elsewhere on and rotate in on their own time/money. FO's, rampies, and apprentices all live at their base. There is a crew house in Grimshaw and lately the owner has become more open to the idea of rotational positions but he mostly wants people to live locally and be a part of the community. There are free golf passes, gym discounts, and a variety of other events they like people to attend that the company sponsors.

Rampies work until a sub 500 hour FO spot opens up which requires someone having 500 hours to move into an AB health spot. This means sometimes rampies get passed over if no one has the AB health minimums. That said, the last 2 guys to get PPC'd were close to or under the 1 year mark and now that FO's are going straight to Jazz and Encore that will only speed up. They also will move rampies into a maintenance apprenticeship now which could be a great career route.

It would likely take a rampie 3 years from date of hire to go to Jazz (although the current record is 2 years), vs more like 4 years to go captain unless you came with time (assuming 1 year ramp, 3 years flying). Lowest time upgrade has been at 1500 TT, right now most captains are in the 3000 hour plus range with 1 exception. 85K is good money, 7 and 7 is a good schedule.

FO's work 10 and 5, on a mix of sched, medvacs, and reserve. All want to fly more, but the company likes having more FO's than they need to cover attrition and to cover the infrequent charters that do pop up.

Captains are 7 and 7, the 10 and 10 idea is out there but not in use at present. 14 and 14 has been done in the past but it's the max you can be on call by cars so it leaves the company's hands tied if a contingency comes up. I think they'd do it for 2 seasoned veterans but not for new hires.

All of the machines are daytime ones except one, so most maintenance is evening or night, except scheduled stuff which is all day time. The engineers have a lot of autonomy to do their thing. Call Allen Smith (DOM) or Tannin Behneke (HR) if you have questions they will be straight with you. If you want to be flown home, want a car, and a suite, be up front about it, they may or may not be in a position to accommodate you. It may depend what experience you bring to the table and availability.

As for the AB health thing, the contract has been extended but beyond that it's still in question. Anything else would be pure opinion so ask HR when you talk to them and base your decisions on that information.

In SPR's day the company worked the "first up" "second up" bullshit so you were basically always on call. Now there is a day shift and a night shift, so no matter what you are on, you get 12 hours free from duty most 24 hour periods. When it's busy you could get min duty rest which is 10 hours between on call shifts. You can go out for dinner, have a beer, eat 5 pounds of wings, buy groceries and have a life.

Thank you co-joe. That was very helpful. Gave a fairly good feel for the company culture and working environment.

I am curious though....It looks like they've been advertising for AMEs since July. Does it take that long to get AMEs? Are there reasons other than being quite rural (at least for the Peace River position) that they're not getting the job filled?

There was a small amount of turnover this year, one AME transferred to another base, and one left for the coast. Getting people to move to YPE is always a challenge especially if moving a family is involved. There are a tonne of benefits to living there. Houses are a fraction of the cost of in any of the big cities and if you wanted to live out in the country you can get great land for your money. You can dirt bike, quad, or sled from your door in a lot of the neighbourhoods on the edge of town. There's a ski hill, a theatre, restaurants, ETC.

You could really live anywhere within an hour which is probably a dozen small towns like Nampa, St Isidore, Berwyn, Grimshaw, etc, or in Peace. You could also rotate in and out but you'd have to work out a deal with management as to costs and such. I think the schedule is 8 on 6 off, not sure why those numbers but they'd answer any questions if you are considering it. There are day shifts and night on call for the 24 hour plane. I think if they get 1 more AME the on call shifts would go down quite a bit to every 2nd tour but I'm not the one to ask.

I've been thoroughly impressed with the maintenance. All snags go in the book, and on the company web site, which locks the plane out. You can't self dispatch until the snag has been rectified or MEL'd. Rapport between pilots and AME's is great. Decent communication, although it could always be improved, but it's a great team. The machines aren't new so stuff breaks, but with the daily scheds to Edmonton, and Calgary, parts come quick. If you had to drive to a small town for a broken machine it would be in a company car, on their time/ dime.
