What do you do if you smell rubber?

Post by pelmet »

C-GHQQ, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft operated by Air Canada, was conducting flight ACA009 from Calgary Intl, AB (CYYC) to New Tokyo Intl, Japan (RJAA). During cruise flight at FL380 approximately 550 nautical miles North of Vancouver Intl, BC (CYVR), the flight crew detected the smell of rubber and elected to divert to CYVR where the aircraft landed overweight without further
event, and with ARFF standing by.

The source of the odour was determined to be from a shipment of new tires being carried in the aircraft's cargo hold. The tire shipment was offloaded and the aircraft was returned to service.

What's even stranger is high cost airmail that usually ships. Surprised that canada would be providing tires to Japan, figured the opposite would be the norm.

Most likely aircraft tires.

A lot of Airlines place spare parts at various locations around the world.

There are also pools of parts between Airlines - this could also be a reason for shipping tires.

The aircraft I fly have a Flyaway Spares Kit (FSK) on board due to the global nature of the flying we do.

Or use more foreplay.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

The worst thing in an aircraft is an odd smell, is it just some cargo or is something burning? or is the cargo burning? it sucks not knowing and the last thing you'd want to do is continue only to realize it was a fire.

I was told if you arnt carful you can keep the breaks on while you are flying. This can cause a rubber smell from the tire dragging through the air.

Just because you can't fly it straight dosn't mean it's the planes fault

I am told that, some time in his/her career, there isn't a float pilot alive who has not applied brakes when approaching the dock a tad fast... (;>0)
