For me it is a no brainer...south and twin!
It would have been harder as: North twin or south single...

Do you have enough TT to move over to the left seat of the 401?

its important to get the PIC time, but be wary. this time of year alot of northern ops are winding down, single engine drivers leaving cause the roads will be goin in and not much single flying to be done when the darkness comes. depends where it is.

Go where the hours are and PIC time is really important in the beginning.

Grab the PIC time unless you have enough to go LH seat in the 401. NWT is great flying experience and you won't regret it. Who is the 206 operator that may cast some light on the right direction to take. PM me if you like.

That sounds dubious at best. If you're in a position that you're thinking about at 206 job you most likley don't have 1500hrs or something like that. So with that assumption made, most companies will not upgrade a 250hr pilot to capt on a C-401 in a year. I'd be very wary of an operating promising you the world.

206vs/twin

Post by oldncold »

be careful of the twin- ALL 400 series twins have an Airworthiness directive
out for a major inspection of the wing and a spar strap Cost is around 60,000 bucks and some signifcant down time if the airframe is close to 8000hrs . check the aircraft registration in the cars under ad's to see if it applys or the ac is close to the ad times.

if you get 206 time up north does the company have twins or turbine

if yes get a deal say you will stay longer than a year provided an upgrade after the first 12months that way you will have pic time and can stay captain . get it in writing it is a long walk south after paying the bills up there. 8)

C402 was my first job. It served me well and you will already have a PPC when a captain walks out the door. Remember, the airlines are hiring so there will be movement.

In my opinion, the PIC time is important but you will have access to multi pic a lot faster if you are already flying the airplane. I only had 700 tt when I went to the left seat of a C402 after being in the right for only a short time. Why? cause the captain quit.

Going Up north as PIC, you will learn to make decisions on your own, in a very dynamic environment getting paid a decent wage with company supplied housing and the northern living allowance tax credit. Nothing to spend your money on other than a sled. save money pay off debts. get 1000 PIC over a couple years. move back south. talk with buddies at the bar about "the good ol' days up north."

FO on 401: fly to the same few airports shooting ILS approaches (mabye the odd non-precision) not getting any PIC time, getting paid crap money. struggle to make rent, KD for dinner most nights. the only bonus is multi time. talk with buddies about the crazy times they had up north, wishing that you had done that when you were young.

Of course, there are exceptions, but lets look at the average reality for most of us.
