So you'd think in times like this, we should be able to negotiate some decent work rules and salaries for pilots since the airlines are doing "so well" ...?

That's a very short sighted and ignorant statement based on factors outside of the airlines control.

I did not read the bloomberg article, but I will indicate this as far as American pilots are concerned.
One of them happens to be on of my best buddies. He flies a 737 for 316K US. He is a senior guy mind you, but I think it is not justified to say that the particular cadre of pilots is underpaid in that particular company.
