EAA AirVenture Oshkosh July 23-29 2018

Post by Beefitarian »

They probably should increase their sponsorship for me making this thread annually. I could just as easily be advertising a fly in much closer to me.

Here the website incase you never heard of the event or can't operate Google.

Anyone have a favoured port of entry when flying from Toronto to Osh?

Some use MBS (Saginaw Int'l) if you want to go over the lake. I have used PHN (Port Huron/St. Clair County) several times in the past. They see a lot of Oshkosh traffic so they are generally pretty quick getting you through. They are rarely on time though...

Yup from Southern Ontario , Port Huron is the best route
Then you have stops like , Jackson , Valparaiso , Southbend , Poplar Grove, Rockford etc to choose from for fuel stops.

As always there will be lots of very cool stuff and people. One of these is supposed to be there - F82 Twin Mustang and also this - Yak 110. It would be awesome to see them to do a joint flyby. I hope they arrange it.

This year we are going to ride in a germ tube to Houston, in August. I might tell you how it goes if I don't melt.

One day I might make it back.

A comment in the CNE airshow thread about it being a little too quiet prompted me to track down the following video. As always, the reality is not captured adequately on film, but it's still very cool. The night airshow had just been cancelled due to a huge storm moving in from the East and we were hustling back to our tent beside the plane which was parked at the south end of the grounds. Hearing an extremely loud roar we we looked back over our shoulders towards the runway (which was only a few hundred feet away) and here came the B-1 just after takeoff over the end of the runway. The sky and grounds were much darker than this video make it look, and out of the gloom came this bellowing, massive aircraft. At full afterburner and that close, it shakes you to your core and fills you with awe. It must be a real hoot for the crew - especially on the company's dime.
