Contract Pilot Info & Norms

I was surprised the search function didn't turn up more info, so here I am...

What's the contract pilot responsible for and what's the employer responsible for? I know it would come down to a contract of course, but what are some of the norms?


Insurance/liability - is a contract pilot typically put on the employers insurance?
Does insurance exist that a contract pilot can purchase to protect himself incase they have an accident?
Does medical insurance exist for purchase should the contract pilot injure themselves/have a heart attack/etc while on the job? (This is more geared towards working out of country.)

Basically, what are the things you professional contract pilots ensure you have to cover your butt while contracting yourself out?

It would really depend on the nature of the operation you're contracting with. I have only contracted with larger expat employers that include full coverage of such items in their contracts (they couldn't attract expats without it). This provides world-wide medical coverage by the company, even on leave. A couple of times visiting in Canada I needed to see a doctor, I paid the full non-resident charges and then was reimbursed by my employer. I would say that is closer to the "norm", but as you state, it would really depend on the precise operation and contract.

It would be to do contract work for a Canadian survey company that operates in the US.
