Medevac pilot job description

Post by Roger Ident »

What does a typical work shift for a Medevac Captain or FO look like? Once the first call of the day starts your duty day, what are some expectations by companies besides pre-flight to post-flight? I'm referring to work performed that would not be reflected on any company documents. How is Medevac work differerent from Charter work?

Which company? Which province?

There is cleaning of the interior of the plane, which might be done by the medic(s) if it is for medical reasons. Equipment might have to be moved on/off the plane. You might have to fuel the planes. You might have to wait around a bit, might have to load patients manually or with a lifting device. Lots of different options.

According to Employment services, the only hours worked is the "air time" submitted by company. Doesn't bode well for anyone if they are laid off since a pilot didn't perform enough work to be eligible for EI. An average medevac pilot flies between 500-700 hours a year. So work performed while picking up patients and fueling does not qualify for work performed and pilot will not receive compensation if they are working a stat day.

Is that different for a medevac pilot vs an airline pilot or other 703 pilots?

Digits is right. Way to many variables. One or two medics? Medics or nurses? If you work for a company that is a basic provider your going to have to do a lot more of the going along to nursing stations to pick up patients and help carry stretchers and bags. If you stay with the plane then you get to stay back and make sure no one tries to stuff red rags in your fuel tank to sniff your fuel. Either way there is always phone calls to check weather and file flight plans and calls to company to let them know you arrived and another to let them know you are leaving. So minimum of three calls. And then you get to help load patients and bags. And de icing and sweeping props depending on the season. Not sure how this isn't considered work

Unfortunately from personal experience several times before this industry turned around I can say that EI will cover you. If you have a problem go higher up the food chain as it has been dealt with in the past.
Your normal front line person will not likely be familiar with this. There's not a whole lot of laid off and unemployed pilots out there right now

I agree with digits_ and cfall, way too many variables. But no company will include this in their job description and therefore companies do not have to pay for this time away from base but in uniform and working. Because nothing is written in memo or policy...I'm interested in hearing if anyone has dealt with a labour dispute regarding hours worked. I agree with Bobcaygeon there is plenty of work for medevac pilots and 703 in general.
