To all those hopeing to get a call from Jazz

Post by KAG »

I'm just wondering what type of time/experience you all have.
I have a point to this thread, which I'll share later on after some responses come in.

Cheers.

I know of a guy who got on... I'm kind of guessing here, but I'd say 7000 hours or so, probably more actually... some King Air command, lots of PC-12 and even more Metro PIC. Good dude, too.

Jazz or AC?. Would you take one over the other or jump at the first one that calls you? Since there is no flow through any more.

Over 4000 TT
2800 MPIC
1500 Turbine

P.S. Did you know a Metroliner has two less systems than a 727!!! WOW.

Whoever calls first. Either one of those names on may pay stub would look better than HRDC.

Waiting is a toughy. You might get the call from AC but a bird in the hand... I know guys in the last hiring round that said "no way, gonna wait for AC". Some are still waiting. If you can tolerate your current job then I would say wait if you want. For those that chose Jazz, it is not a bad place to be. 60 some Jets on order, a pension, great benefits and 100% guarantee that you will never be without a big brother to fight with. Oh wait, GS is going to solve that. Maybe by that time the compnay will have divided us more and starting salary at AC will be 25k a year and Jazz pilots will be flying 110 seaters for 60k tops.

The reason I asked this question is because of the current hiring status - Jazz is picking up the qualified drivers, and mainline is all over the spectrum.
I am just shocked at how many high time pilots are willing to take such a drastic pay cut to sit (right seat) till hell freezes over on a Dash 8 or an RJ.
Yes I know mainline doesn't pay all that well to begin with, but in a couple years from hire? Different story.

I Would have to be a senior Jazz FO to earn what I'm earning now, but yes Jazz would be a better lifestyle (not living in T.O but you get the idea)

Is jazz still the great place to work it once was? How is company moral?
Upgrade time if willing to move to whatever base?

4 years ago, Jazz was the place to be, I did the interview and sim at 2000 hours and was waiting until last FEB when they decided to start fresh. Then they lower the pay, raise the mins, no flow through agreement and high time guys are flocking to get there...I don't get it.

But like the expression goes, a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

Just thought I’d pick some brains as to what and why. If my phone was to ring I honestly don't know what I'd say and I'm trying to make up my mind on the whole issue.

Cheers.

Thats exactly what im gonna do. Not sure Jazz is what I want. I would have to fly for 5 years at jazz to make what I make now. And I not a huge fan of the Dash 8. Or YYZ for that matter.

Unless those who have gone to Jazz because it suits their lifestyles, I really don't believe many think through the points that KAG brought forward, when they decide to go to Jazz, maybe they are looking through "rose coloured glasses" and only see AIRLINE, not what they may be sacrificing to get on with Jazz.

It is surprising seeing guys with higher times(and probably good paying jobs), leaving for a job that pays so much lower especially with the current contract in place for another 4 years....as I have said before, I think the novelty of being at Jazz will wear off pretty quick, and many will leave there just as fast as they arrive...."money talks, bullshit walks"

A buddy of mine that I reccommended just got his call for a interview at JAZZ last night, so If you have applied the calls are going out.

I've been at Jazz for 6 years and let me say its had its ups and downs, but I still think its the 2nd best job in the country next to AC. If you come here you are still guaranteed an interview with AC when your number comes up.

they've viewed mine 10 times. 7000 hrs, lots of mtpic, including metro.
I've been wrestling with the issue as well, almost hoping they wouldn't call before AC does, but what are you going to do? What if you wait for AC, they do call, and then they say no thanks?
The biggest problem will be how to support a family in yyz on $35k for the first year. Of course, you'd have that same problem with AC.

You might be making more money on a King Air, metro etc... What are the long term prospects where you work? Pension? Room for advancement? If they are acceptable then roll the dice and wait. I suspect most people that are going to jazz realise that there is no guarantee that AC will call nor is there a guarantee that you will be selected if interviewed. For those reasons, some are chosing to go to Jazz and take a shot. I did and now they are intervieing around my seniority number. All the guys that were going striaght to AC last boom that didn't get into AC are now chewing their nails and pissing their pants about maybe getting an interview with the mothership. What do you think they would give to have a guaranteed shot right now?

You wonder about long term prospects? I never heard of Borek or Perimeter or North Cariboo, or Sunwest in bankruptsy protection? Haven't heard of these company's laying off pilots in the past few years...have you? Pensions maybe not, but at least they pay a fair wage, with some benefits. May not be as glamourous as sitting on reserve or in the right seat of a Dash 8 for years stuck living in Toronto...but these company's are way more stable than Jazz over the long term....

After talking about this very issue with a few good friends in similar situations, I've decided I would take job if it were even offered to me.
My reasons are similar to those that are already there. Yes the pay would suck, but an airline job is what I want. If it turns out not to be the green pastures I hope it is, then I have other options.

But I do have a question and an observation; Does anyone know anyone who got the interview who DIDN’T have southern ONT address on their resume? I can’t think of anyone who got the call who doesn’t already live in or near T.O.
Just an observation and I hope it’s an incorrect one.

Cheers

In the first class there was one person from up near Thunder Bay, and the second class there are at least two from up here. So don't worry, they are taking the northern Bush Bunnys as well.

Thunderbay is still ONT. I also have a friend who lives in Monteral who just got interviewed, both are pretty close to T.O.
Another friend of mine who has 5500 TT, 3000 multi PIC turbine, Jet time and 18 views of his resume on workopolis,But an east coast addy. No call yet.

I live and work around YYC, and I cannot think of anyone who got a call out here for Jazz anyway...Food for thought. Again, I hope I'm wrong.

Cheers.

Oh boy you got me there. Those are some real great spots you listed. Only problem is not everyone's idea of a successful career is loading moosemeat into the back of a plane while having to scrape bear shit off their workboots. Been there done that. If northern flying is your thing, fill your boots! I suspect that the people applying to Jazz or even AC for that matter are looking for a Pension, some benefits and maybe a little more civilizion than Thompson Manitoba. YYZ is only one base in both systems and most people based there live in surrounding cities and not in Toronto.

You could have said that about Bearskin a few years ago but look at them now. Fact is, there is no SURE THING in aviation. All you can do is get the earliest number and try and hold on to your seat.

3000 TT
1100 F/O 727
400 S/O 727
500 PIC Single Tprop
100 Learjet F/O
Mid twenties

Been to the bush, flew corporate, tried a day job and spent the last bunch of years trying to stay awake in the middle of the night. Have had the time of my life doing all of it. Looking for stability, future and just a change. To be honest Jazz is the first to call and I was happy to get the call. Excited about the chance to see how the Dash handles. Whatever will be will be. I hope it all works out, if not at least I will still be employed......remember not being employed sitting at the Wendy's beside YYZ wishing you were in that Dash going by.

Everyone makes their decisions based on their own experiences and needs. For some it doesn't seem right. For others it does. It's as simple as that. We must also understand the crap written on this forum is not gospel and if you are taking as gospel you need to wake up and smell the coffee the F/A is brewing in the back!!

Good luck to all and I hope everyone finds there spot someday, I really hope I do!!

fLyInG pHiSh:

great attitude!! i know the pay may not be the best, etc, but a great company to work for and some long term stability. i cannot believe the number of whiners, complainers and just plain jealous pilots (and wannabees)on here.

I know from my standpoint, i have an awesome job, work for an awesome company and have some incredible job security here, but if i get the call, although i would take an incredible pay cut at first, it would be tough to say no. so, good luck do well in the process and hopefully it all works out.
