Typical Questions
Hello,
Hoping someone can provide some insight on what life as a new FO would be like (GDO, upgrade time, parings, layover time)
A lot of carriers have been holding open houses \ information sessions for Pilots, any word if SR is planning on doing one?

Re: Typical Questions
Lots of changes are coming so any answers that I could give you now will most certainly change in the near future. The biggest change coming is potential unionization under ALPA which we expect to know for certain within the next 30 days. Assuming that the ratification process is successful with the CIRB, we’ll soon be negotiating our first collective agreement so changes can be expected. In the short term we’re also transitioning from a fair bidding system to a seniority-based bidding system in January 2019 which would have a big impact on anyone coming in today; as new hires will hold entire months of standby until they’ve acccrued enough seniority to hold a block.
To answer your questions, currently we’re guaranteed 11 SDOs a month. Upgrade time is as quick as you can meet the internal matrix. The company recently posted eight internal vacancies for Captain positions (4 YYZ/4 YUL), and was unable to fill any of them due to no FOs within the company meeting the matrix. The company has been attempting to hire Direct Entry Captains but as far as I know only one has been hired at this point. Pairings range from one to three days, with the majority lately being three-day pairings. Layovers generally range from 12 to 18 hours in most cases with the odd pairing where you end up with up to a 24 hour layover although it’s rare.
I have no information on whether an open house/information session is planned at this time.
Hope that helps, cheers.

Re: Typical Questions
Where do you guys conduct your E175 sim training? Is it at AC up at Bramelea or elsewhere? Just a curiosity question... thanks...

Yes, sim training is conducted in Toronto at the Air Canada training facility on Logistics Drive. In the past a handful of guys were sent to Dallas for their initials due to a lack of sim availability in Toronto but it’s not a common occurance.
