Aloha! WestJet Announces All-Jet Service to Honolulu and Maui

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 20, 2005) -

Airline Will Offer Five Flights a Week to Honolulu Starting December 9,
2005 and Two Flights a Week to Maui Starting December 17, 2005

WestJet (TSX:WJA) today announced it will begin offering non-stop
service to the new markets of Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii. This new
schedule also offers connecting flights to several other WestJet
destinations across North America. Seats are available for sale
immediately.

Following are the schedule details of the non-stop Hawaii service
WestJet will offer:

While the 767 may be nicer due to the wide body as I understand it the 757 and the 737 have the same fuselage cross section and cruise within about 20 mph of each other (.78 vs. .80) so I don't see that much difference. If you're talking about individual airline seat configs/service/etc. that's different but otherwise not much to choose between the 57 and 37 from the average pax point of view.

Yeah, I'd rather have a 28" pitch for 6 hours on a 227 seat single aisle 757 (like C3/Royal/AT used to have) than a 34" pitch on a 738... I've been on all three of their 757s and had my knees at my throat for the whole time (I'm 5'11, hardly huge).

As for the 767, dual aisle perception does make a difference, I'll give you that one...

Won't Westjet be load-restricted on the out runs? They will be travelling against the jet stream, and unless Westjet load-restricts or installs cargo fuel tanks, I don't see them as capable of taking a full passenger load plus their baggage, unless Westjet is flying the HGW version of the -700's (the -800's are really going to cut it close, with almost no room for error if Westjet is flying the HGW variant). They can probally take a full load back, as they have the jetstream with them on return to YVR. From YVR to HNL, it is 2351nm or 4354 km, and the 737-700 HGW can take 126 pax and has a range of 3260nm or 6037km. The 737-800 HGW can go 2940nm or 5445km, carrying 162 pax. Add in prevaling winds, and Westjet is cutting it close, for either birds. And don't get me started on YVR - OGG, as that is 4301 km.

I'm not positive but I think Aloha was load restricted out of YVR some days and had to make a tech stop a few times for fuel during the winter. I'm sure the powers that be have researched this extensively before making the plunge.

So, is there any news of Westjet installing cargo hold fuel tanks, a la BBJ? Should be a straight foward conversion and back, as needed, and will provide a good margin of error.

From what I understand from a few on the inside, next stop is Ireland. ETOPS is a marvelous thing.

I am betting that Westjet is thinking about doing some mods to a selection of their fleet by installing extra fuel tanks in the cargo hold. Doesn't PrivatAir operate a fleet of Boeing Buisness Jets and Airbus Corporate Jets that have cargo hold fuel tanks, giving them Trans-Atlantic range? This will allow Westjet to fly as far as Germany.

Hmm I can’t see a LCC installing extra fuel tanks in a light twin as it cuts into the payload and flexibility of their aircraft. The folks that do operate in this dedicated configuration charge their passengers a hefty extra premium and that’s not exactly the business plan of a successful LLC.

However from a pilots perspective its a great idea as it helps minimize the pucker effect unfortunately the bean counters think differently.
