Isn't a great airport for the Q though. Especially in the winter. 100' wide runway..if it's plowed to the edges (limit is 98' for the Q in order to be able to turn around) and 5000' if landing on 19. It's tight...KenoraPilot wrote: ↑Mon Jan 14, 2019 9:07 pm

Re: Classic Dash replacement??
CYGK 01/19 is 6000 ft. There is a turning bay at the button of 19 so landing on 01 is not an issue when it comes to the backtrack.cloudskimmer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 14, 2019 10:45 pmIsn't a great airport for the Q though. Re: Classic Dash replacement??
The threshold is displaced on 19 by 1000' so your LDA is 5000'. The turning bay is also at the displaced threshold not at the end. It's tricky if the runway isn't totally plowed to the edges or the turning bay isn't cleared or blocked by windrows.prop2jet wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 12:17 pmCYGK 01/19 is 6000 ft. Re: Classic Dash replacement??
With the new fleet plan, I imagine this next equipment bid is going to be an epic Dash 8 reduction in YYZ (all 100s), partial reduction in YUL.
Existing classic routes for runs like YGR, ZBF, YGK, YYB, maritimes etc will just go on the 300 is my guess. Other classic routes to be upgauged and run with less frequency.
Big shake up out east for sure.

I'm betting it'll be -100 flying put on the Q and Q flying going to the RJ. Perhaps there is also move afoot to simply drop a lot of the smaller routes?Monorail Conductor wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 6:23 pm With the new fleet plan, I imagine this next equipment bid is going to be an epic Dash 8 reduction in YYZ (all 100s), partial reduction in YUL.

I’ll disagree on one point here. The Q400 has a similar crappy heating/cooling system as the 300. In winter at night with a large pax load either pax are to hot or pilots froze. It’s one or the otherHansDietrich wrote: ↑Wed Jan 02, 2019 3:09 pm The Dash 8-100/300 needs to be replaced ASAP. I didn't like it as a pilot and I like it even less as a paying passenger. Why you may ask:
1. Crap bin space, where I can't fit anything more than a coat.
2. Sky Check, where they break or dirty my carry on bag (not to mention having to take my laptop, etc on the plane with me and wrap it around in my coat)
3. Poor leg room
4. Loud
5. Vibrates
6. Bad temp control (too cold / too hot)
The Q400 is miles ahead of this abomination named the "Classic". Air Canada needs to rid itself of such old aircraft right away. If an ex Dash pilot hates is so much, how do you think passengers feel about it? I'm actually shocked that Canada's "legacy carrier" even allows such junks to have their name on it. If I had the choice between Encore or Porter, I'd choose them in a heartbeat over Jazz, simply because of the "Classic Crap 8".
That's how I really feel about it.

Re: Classic Dash replacement??
Has anyone encountered issues taking a Q into YGK with contamination, icing etc?. Not a Q driver, but its my understanding Qs can be runway hogs.cloudskimmer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 14, 2019 10:45 pmIsn't a great airport for the Q though. I actually disagree on the ACMs in winter. On the 300/311, it is actually very easy to play with the GASP FAN (300) or FC FAN (311) and run the bleeds at 3/4 to MAX and have a nice warm 50deg cockpit duct and a crisp 21-22 deg cabin. It’s buried in the supplementary chapter of the AOM how to achieve proper cooling/heating... but then again Jazz doesn’t care about teaching systems knowledge anymore.av8ts wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 1:43 amI’ll disagree on one point here. In twenty years time when your kids ask how you got into flying you want to be able to say "work and determination" not "I just kept taking money from your grandparents for type ratings until someone was stupid enough to give me a job"
Re: Classic Dash replacement??
How much longer will Jazz keep the -100s flying out west...anyone got an update ?
Re: Classic Dash replacement??
What leaves AC first, the 30 year old 767's or the 32 year old -100's

Heard two conflicting rumours (which is all I hear), that the 100's will stay in YYC until Dec 2020, the second rumour is they will be phased out by Summer 2020 and 300's returning to YYC. Regardless 300's will be coming back to YYZ from YUL and YYZ.

Re: Classic Dash replacement??
You'll see the DH8-100's gone before the 767 for sure. The 767 is doing a great job adding lift to the routes effected by the 737MAX issue.
Re: Classic Dash replacement??
If we are keeping the classics for a while longer I hope they paint them sooner or later. They are looking pretty sorry these days. Only 1 -300 is in the new paint so far.
Let’s Go Brandon
Re: Classic Dash replacement??
All -100s will be gone from Jazz by May 1st. -300s moving west to replace the -100s.

Re: Classic Dash replacement??
Are they planning to close the eastern bases for the classic?
Since I’m flying the King Air, does that qualify me to fly the Queen of the skies?

Re: Classic Dash replacement??
Not sure, but highly highly doubt it. The YYC Base is a small DH8 base. Likely only 4-5 tails will be in YYC.Caterpillar wrote: ↑Tue Mar 03, 2020 8:11 amAre they planning to close the eastern bases for the classic?

With COVID, can we expect 100% of the -100 to retire quicker than by the end of the year?

4 of the 6 have just been ferried to YYB over the last 3 days. The last two should be going to YYB this week and a few 300's will be sent out to YYC.Caterpillar wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 8:57 pm With COVID, can we expect 100% of the -100 to retire quicker than by the end of the year?
(YYB where they will go to Voyageur and be parted out or start a new life elsewhere)
Re: Classic Dash replacement??
I wonder if the rest of the jazz fleet will see a revamp in the future as a result of the pandemic ?
Re: Classic Dash replacement??
100%. Less flying requires less aircraft.
Accelerated retirement of Dash 8 100’s and a bullseye on the 15 CRJ200’s.
The issue of ‘owned’ vs ‘leased’ will be consequential.
